Hollywood Park is like 10 minutes from South Bay (where Tyson, Eric and I live). And Commerce is about 30 minutes from us.

We'll have to come see you play one of these days. Definitely let us know when you make a big event.

You mean Thursdays (for the $120 buy-in) at Hollywood Park?

There's also Hustler Casino in Gardena, just a few blocks from where I work. They have very soft NL ring games. Don't know much about their tourneys... check their website:

Good luck Ripp, don't think you'll need it though. Just remember! Don't splash the pot :P

Wish Canada had Poker Tourney's, I think it'd be much more fun playing against real people instead of cyber rocks.

    Yes.
    Whatever you do.

DO NOT THROW YOUR CARDS INTO THE BOARD WHEN YOU TURN THEM OVER.
If your cards hit the flop/turn/river its a no-no.

    Good luck Rip!

Glad to see you getting out there for some live games.

I started playing live and online at about the same time but the more live games I play the more I find online poker boring.

There's just sooooo much more to this game that your computer can't offer.

Let us know how you do.

    Fast forward to tomorrow:
I'm sorry guys, I have bad news. It all started when Rippy made it to the final 2 at last night's tournament. Rippy went all-in and his cards were stolen by a passing griffin. He replaced his cards with 2 club crackers and won the hand, but Fishy stepped in and ate the crackers. After consulting the tournament director, Rippy lost because his crackers were eaten.

Ripptyde is now serving 8-10 years and fishstick... may he rest in peace.

By the way, good luck tonight Rippy.
I don't know what they have to say

Congrats Rippty! Frustrating way to end, but 7th is still pretty impressive.

I've been a member for awhile, mostly lurking, but have appreciated your many posts and tried to incorporated some of your concepts into my own style. Good luck with the job hunting. I'm sure a lot of online players won't miss you

    Great job Rippy.

It sounds like a frusterating end, but I'm glad you made it so far!

    Great hands!

oh, and he leaves out the best part:

rippy calls me after the first break sounding totally pumped, and describes this hand to me (rip - correct me if i make a mistake):

    - rippy on the button with AK suited
    - 3 all-ins preflop before the action gets around to him
    - i would have folded, tj cloutier would have folded, but rippy calls and pushes all-in
    - other players turn over QQ, JJ and 88
    - rippy hits a flush draw on the flop, and completes it on the river to win the hand!

    that's our rip!

hey rippy - congrats on the final table and 7th - you should be proud.

    even in spite ronald mcpeckerhead...
i hate what i have become to escape what i hated being...

Thanks for the great story Ripp, but but I don't see any problem with the way the floor boss handled the situation. He has a responsibility to protect that guy from being bullied or harassed by the other players. As soon as the guy indicates "no deal", even if it is only a head shake, the floor boss has a responsibility to start the next hand. It would have been unfair to force that guy to constantly reject a deal multiple times in between every hand.

Rip, you have no idea how much I can relate to your story.

I was playing a multi (smaller buyin) at Pechanga, about 250 players. I made it to the final table, blinds were insane (about 5000sb/10000bb) and I have 17k in chips, which puts me in about 5th place. Chip leader has 200k, next has 100k, and everybody else has enough for one hand. A guy with 8k in chips is the only one who won't cut a deal, and he's next to be in the big blind. "I came here to play, so let's play." So no deal. I'm one seat to his left. He catches KJ in the BB, doubles up, then when the blind hits me I catch KQ. He knocks me out, along with 2 other small stacks, with A2offsuit, with A PAIR OF DEUCES!!!

Two hands after I'm out, dipshit agrees to make a deal.

When we first sat at the table, I told him, "Look man, you're gonna be the table enemy if you don't make a deal." The table couldn't knock lucky guy out.

It probably would have been best for me to fold in the BB, then fold in the SB, then look at 6 hand hoping for a deal. I got $65 for 8th place, but the deal would have been worth $180 for all the shortstacks.

It's a common criticism of standard tourney structure to reserve so much money for 1st place...which is why deals are so common. It's just "part of the poker game." Final tables are often crapshoots.

I read an article somewhere about how "stonewalling" puts you in a position to get more money out of a deal...it's one of the tricks in your poker moneymaking arsenal.

BTW, you are absolutely correct about how easy these tourneys are to win...no problem at all. Tourneys attract some of the worst poker players in the world, so it shouldn't be tough for you in the future.

If you ever have the chip lead going in to that final table, make sure you get real paid.

One last thing: At one point on the main page there was advice to the effect of, "There no way to avoid losing KK against AA, but KK still makes money..."

In live action tourneys, you can avoid AA EVERY TIME!

    A. Watch for the "shaking hands." I've dodged aces about 4 times in live action games just by folding to the "shaking hands."

    B. Tight/passive players will overbet them in tourney situations, and demonstrate "strength" in their body language.

Real rounding is done in B&M casinos where bad players will betray themselves quite often.

I have that same shaking problem. I'll admit it here because I'll never have to play live action with you guys. But i get that way with a monster during live action.

Heck it happened last night during a small 8 person $5 buyin with some friends. I'm holding A8 from the BB flop A8x turn 8.. I'm holding Aces full and this guy is betting into me.

Its not a problem at home because I can yell and jump and scream at the screen. I can shake / hold my breath all I want.

Heck the time I flopped Quads in a 3/6 game. I almost passed out. I've got 2 people capping the betting and i'm just along for the ride.
I had to put my hands under the table so people wouldn't see. I almost hyperventilated

It stopped happening after a few weeks of playing live action but then I stopped playing for 6 months. First game back it happens. My hands always shake when i'm excited or nervous.. I hate it.. anyone with 1/2 a brain can see what i've got.

Great play there Ripp, making the final table of any event with that many players is awesome. But I have to kinda agree with TheNatural about protecting the other guy. If the guy was actually thinking about it then the floor did wrong, but since he never said anything during or after the cards fell, the floor did right. I was the big chip leader one time with just 5 players left, and the guys were pesturing me every fricken hand. Eventually the floor did the same exact thing. I kinda wonder if you had knocked that guy out, and split his money if the post would of said "this idiot cost himself a bunch of money and we happily split it evenly"
I have been involved in several of these situations and came out ahead several times and ended up on the short end several times. If you were in the lead by a bunch would you have split evenly? When I am in the situation, I look out for number one, if Im in the middle stackwise, have ok position, and think I am better than most at the table I will occasionally not chop, if there are some shortstacks. The reason I do it is because its going to happen to you, where they wont chop when your the short stack.
S&M has an entire section on how to chop fairly, and its not just a percentage of chips. In that the chip leader has a better than average chance to win so he should get more than just the percentage of chips out.

Once again awesome play, I hope you had your FTR shirt on! I just got my baseball jersey, it is really nice.

When you win one of the big ones you will have to get a picture of you in it accepting the big cash!!

    FTR FOREVER!!
Holy crap I cant play against Yoda!!
