    Default First Tourney experience

I entered a $20+2 sit and go at pokerstars just to try mu luck at a tourney to see how I would do.

I started off with 2 pretty good hands early, winning with AK and folding QQ due to a horrible flop. I tried to play conservative off the jump just to see if anyone would risk losing everything early. After I folded QQ, another guy was dealt QQ and went down hard to pocket fives on a 10,10,5 flop.

I hung around and worked my way back up. I was dealt QQ again with like a J35 flop. Next card is nothing. I go allin and get once call, they have KJ. Awesome, get by the river and I'm ok. Ut oh, river is a K. I'm now down to like 1,000 chips, good thing they called my allin on a low stack.

Anyhow, I eventually come back and am holding on to 4th place. I go allin and still like 1,200 from the guy in 2nd, then I knock the 3rd place guy out. The woman in 1st eventually takes down the guy in 2nd leaving her with like 7,200, me with 4,000.

I eventually go allin (Q5) and I'm behind on the flop (5,6,10), she has K6. I catch a Queen on the turn and win a huge pot, taking a commanding lead. I go on to win, calling her allin (Q,10), with me having A7 suited.

Great game. I would recommend playing tight early in the game, waiting to catch the right cards later and nail someone. I guess playing too tight could allow others to take a lead on you, but calling on crap cards will make that stack dwindle quickly.

Congrats on the tourney win. That's always a blast.

I agree and usually play the same way, conservative early, aggressive late. The chip stacks are important to keep an eye on also. When I played those sit-n-go's, I would try to hang on until the money round, avoiding battles if it would allow me to make the final three, and then no holds barred after that.

    Default Tourney selection??

    Thanks.

Do you suggest certain sit n go tourneys to join or no? The $20 one I entered had a few good players, the rest seemed ok at best. I've heard $30 sit n go's are about the same, but I think you get a $150 payout, can't remember off the top of my head. I need more experience playing short handed games and head 2 head.

Man, I caught quad nines in that tourney as well, had 99 in the hole and the flop was 799, the person to my right went in for like 250, I raised them to allin (550 or so) and they called. You have to love those hands.

I used to only play the $10 sit-n-go's. They were cool, but personally, I find the regular no-limit tables much more profitable.

    Gotta love quads!!! Nice one.

For those of us that have little-to-no tournament experience, such as me, could you please explain what a sit-and-go is?

    Thanks.

Single table tournament. I guess they call 'em sit and go's since most players sit and then go .

I've played the $11 buy in at Party Poker 3 times, finished 3rd all 3 times. The 3rd time I was the chip leader going into 4 players and had some amazing hands early (KK first hand, had the blinds, a limper and half a stack on the table when I went all-in, no one called.)

Ditto on tight play early, survival poker picking your oportunities. My large table game is solid enough, but I got crushed when the field got down to 3 players. I need A LOT more short table experience and familiarity with the odds in those situations to play these more often.

    Default Sit N Go

Sit N Go's are tourneys that start as soon as they fill up (normally 9 or 18).

I came in 5th in my 2nd tourney ($5 sit n go), had pocket aces against big slick. Unfortunately, 4 spades came up and neither of my aces were spades, he had the king of spades and took me down. Unreal.

Played my 3rd tourney earlier today, came in 3rd ($10 sit n go). Had K5 with K,5,7,10,? showing, I lost down to K7.

    Default single table tourneys

as for your question about $30 tourneys

the skill level isn't much different at all really than from 5 or 10 dollar tourneys. The biggest difference is that people care a little bit more when they lose in general, so they play a little more tight (certainly not always, you'll come across a heck of a lot of loose players still).

I play about 2-8 single table tourneys a day
I'm a little better than break even. My game has been a bit off for the last week or so, instead of trying to win I've been trying not to lose, which sucks. The thing about these tourneys I've noticed is that a lot of people when it comes down to the last 4 or 5 people tighten up big time because they don't want to go out before the money. Thats usually when I start to try to make moves on people.

The one thing you have to be careful of though is to not play it too tight early on and wind up being short stacked with high blinds. You'll have less problem with that on pokerstars than on party poker. The games on pokerstars go on a lot longer; you get more starting chips and the blinds increase less frequently. That can be both a good and a bad thing. I like the pace of the game to be a little faster so I prefer party poker but its just a matter of taste. For a more true tourney experience I would play pokerstars.

Also, playing the big freeroll on pokerstars isn't a bad idea for experience either. Its where I started out and it really helped my play a lot. They have them at 2:30 p, and 3 am with about 4000 people usually playing in them... its a bit loose in the early goings but once it settles down it can be some good poker. You actually get a seat in another tourney which has a 100 cash prize if you make the final table too.

Anyways I play a ton so if anyone has any questions about this stuff my aim is CjBurdenx1

I like the pace of the game to be a little faster so I prefer party poker but its just a matter of taste. cjburden,

Hey, thanks for offering up the advice. Most of us here focus on the cash game, but tourneys are great fun and I know there's interest.

If you check the date it was back in Jan when not many people on FTR were playing SnGs...
Poker is all about the long long long long long long long term . . .
