3 words. BET THE TURN! It was sod's law that the 3 flush would hit on the river, if you went all in on the turn, if this guy had half a brain he would have folded. You let him have a free card, and he hit on the river.

K,J, group 5 fairly late position. Nobody has raised before you, so go for it. I’d bet at least 3 times the big blind.

On the flop you’ve got a guy who’s called in pre flop, may have raised if given the chance who then bets half the pot at you. Hmmm. a little soft, probably doesn’t have the jack but probably does have 2 overcards. You raised, so he thinks you’ve got an ace, maybe another overcard. I’d like to say just call, top pair top kicker isn’t looking that great in the face of this raise. I, fool that i am, would probably reraise as well. If you’re going to reraise it’s got to be big enough to scare him off. The pot, with his bet, is in the 350 range so I’d say 350. I think that’s more than half your stack.

At this point you have to accept that you are done betting. If you call, check out to the river, fold to any bet.

If you raise half your stack and he calls, you’re done betting. You lost. He’s got trips or something big. It’s true that people bluff but this is the very first hand. No reason to think he’s a liar yet. (other than him playing poker…)

Catching the flush sucks. I have lost my last 8 tournaments by hanging on when the turn or river improves my hand to something like this. Every time, I should have seen it coming. My decent hand turned into a monster, but a shadow of the one across the table.

Anyway, the all in was the key. Four suited cards, constant rasing, just let it go. you can’t win the first hand but you sure can loose.

That would be ideal. I probably would have played the same, but bet bigger, and called the all in just like you. I’m still working on being sensitive to raises.

i think the flop raise was too weak and I dont know why you check the turn after reraising on the flop. The flush hit the board you need to find out where you stand, bet out the turn and you'd have gotten reraised all in i'm sure and you could have gotten away from the hand fairly easily. Calling an all in with nothing but a jack high flush had to just be a lapse in judgement i'm assuming.

    Pretty darn bad.

    Preflop:

If you're going to raise preflop, raise to at least 45 - 60. If you're reraised rather big then fold. From the way you played it, you have to assume you're in bad shape here just from his preflop reraise. If you call, you have to be extremely willing to lay the hand down on the flop as you could easily be dominated or against a higher pocket pair than your top pair. You're more praying to hit a straight or open ended straight draw here, as you can't be that confident with a J high or K high flop.

    Flop:

If you raise, raise more. NEVER MIN-RAISE! (I think that should be the new slogan of this website) Calling is ok too, which probably would've resulted in you getting bluffed out on the turn by a big bet. That's ok. Better to be bluffed out of a small pot than lose your stack with a mediocre hand. Anyway, if you raise, raise to about 300 (think in terms of betting 3x what they bet on a standard raising hand). You'd have to fold to a reraise here, but in this case you'd almost certainly have won the pot here.

    Turn:

Why are you checking? Looks like you're hoping to hit the J high flush, which isn't really that good of a 1 card flush hand. Plus you have top pair which you raised earlier. If you think the top pair is good and you think the flush draw is good, you should definitely be all in. Considering stack sizes this may be the best play if you think either is good, as long as you have some folding equity. Checking really isn't good, unless you're check folding or something.

    Flop:

Eeek. I think you called this because you were checking on the turn hoping to hit the flush and then made it and automatically assumed you had the hand, but he clearly looks like he has a higher flush here. Maybe if you had a king high flush you should call this, but this is a really weak call with only a J high one card flush. Also remember this guy preflop raised, and you should've already been worried preflop that this guy had higher cards than you and possibly had you dominated. You should've put this guy on high cards, and he clearly has a heart on the river, so it really should be an easy laydown.

    Good luck, man.
