K,J, group 5 fairly late position. Nobody has raised before you, so go for it. I’d bet at least 3 times the big blind.
On the flop you’ve got a guy who’s called in pre flop, may have raised if given the chance who then bets half the pot at you. Hmmm. a little soft, probably doesn’t have the jack but probably does have 2 overcards. You raised, so he thinks you’ve got an ace, maybe another overcard. I’d like to say just call, top pair top kicker isn’t looking that great in the face of this raise. I, fool that i am, would probably reraise as well. If you’re going to reraise it’s got to be big enough to scare him off. The pot, with his bet, is in the 350 range so I’d say 350. I think that’s more than half your stack.
At this point you have to accept that you are done betting. If you call, check out to the river, fold to any bet.
If you raise half your stack and he calls, you’re done betting. You lost. He’s got trips or something big. It’s true that people bluff but this is the very first hand. No reason to think he’s a liar yet. (other than him playing poker…)
Catching the flush sucks. I have lost my last 8 tournaments by hanging on when the turn or river improves my hand to something like this. Every time, I should have seen it coming. My decent hand turned into a monster, but a shadow of the one across the table.
Anyway, the all in was the key. Four suited cards, constant rasing, just let it go. you can’t win the first hand but you sure can loose.
That would be ideal. I probably would have played the same, but bet bigger, and called the all in just like you. I’m still working on being sensitive to raises.
