Although it wasn't played like a rippy because you were in early position and early in a tourney.

BTW, 74o always beats 75o. Sure you got the flush, but 74o would have managed forcing the board cards to make a full house instead of a mere flush.

Just to clear up the power of a rippy...

Playing a rippy is not for the short stack. A rippy is only powerful when you are in a dominating chip position (usually with table position as well) where you can add fear into the equation and have a tight table image to back up the play. Table position is key since you want to push the full force of the rippy at one person. It looses value if it is diluted into a multi-way pot. Early in the tournament its not a good idea either. There are still the numnuts looking to gamble up on anything. Once people have 2-3 hours invested in a tournament the numnuts are mostly gone and the people left are less likely to call an all-in without a top tier hand.

What makes it profitable is that Rippy (the player, note the capitalization) has so much folding equity when you add all the factors together. He probably forces a fold like 70% of the time and when he's called, sucks out the appropriate percentage.

Moral. 1) Don't play a rippy until you can recognize with 70-80% certainty that you can fold out your opponent with the bet... 2) Never call with a rippy unless you were re-raised and the raise is small compared to the pot.

With that said...

Last night in the hand directly after raising 5x with JJ and folding out the table I tried to get some action going by playing aggressive stupid for a few hands.

So I raised 10x with 25o in late position into a single limper who had about 15x in his stack.

Guy re-raises me all-in... Couldn't let that go so I call him...

He flips KQs

Flop comes 25xxx and I laugh my ass off for about half an hour.

This happened about an hour after I called his all in when I flopped quad 7s.
Needless to say he was a little irked.

I did get more action for the rest of the night...

could i get a little explanation of the Rippy play, is it just picking a random hand that's generally quite weak to try and push someone out and steal a raise ?

Don't think all-in in early position with a weak hand early in an SNG constitutes a rippy. That's just plain crazy.

What sed said is key. Summarized, 3 factors that make this exactly the opposite of a rippy play. Probably the importance of which is in this order: 1. Small stack. 2. Early position. 3. Early in tourney.

"ra" means Rebuy/Addon. It's a perfectly acceptable move in hopes of building a stack.
