Addon or not?

    Default Addon or not?

When playing a $50+5 on stars, beginning with 3k and having a 10k stack at addon time, would you take it? It adds 48% to your buying and 30% to your stack.

The only time I don't add on is when I have a huge stack from 1 buy in, because when I cash the prize is twice as big, relative to investment. With a 10k stack, and a 3k add on, I take it because my stack is going to decrease in value if I don't. I hope this question spawns an interesting discussion about ev here, because the logic is beyond my realm tbh. I'd be curious to know if it's ever a mistake to add on.

Yeah always buy the addon as long as it's bigger than a rebuy, it's about $ per chip not % of stack. Same reasoning as to why you should be looking at getting to addon stage as cheaply as possible especially in 3x's

It's the same as the original chips in that tournament though.

In Tournament Poker for Advanced Players (I think, might be a different book), Sklansky says always add on.

You buy in because you think you have an edge over the field, those chips are worth more in your hands then theirs, so even if the add on is the same price and the same chip-value as the original buy-in, it's worth it.

The exception I can think of is in satellite tourneys where you've got such a significant chip advantage that you're a lock to get a seat. In that case it's just a waste to pay for more chips.
    Check out my self-deprecation here!

Does $ per chip not decrease as the % of stack decreases anyway?

Is there not a point where the $ per chip becomes less than you'd pay for it?

it depends on the blinds when i decide to add-on ! what were the blinds on the next level?

Not really because the $ per chip is from the prize pool which remains static.

Didn't realise the addon was the same as a rebuy in any Stars rebuy. I'd addon pretty much all the time anyway in a standard structure

Maybe I'm a cheapskate but I try to avoid addons if possible.
The aim is obviously to get a big stack so the addon would be such a small percentage that its not worth it.
If really short stacked then obviously would have to take it.

But also usually after the addons the blinds are so high that it becomes bingo time and there is a lot of shoving and doubling so for my thinking its not worth paying the extra to play bingo with it instead of poker.

But do take the addon when it is one of the silly tournaments where the buyin/rebuys are 1k chips and the addon is 10k chips,
so that the tournament really only starts from that point.

I do not know how many players in your tournament. Here is my take...
I take number of entrants and divide by positions paid and multiply by starting chip stack. So if 100 starting players, divided by 10 positions paid and multiply by 3000 starting chips. I would need 30,000 chips to get paid generally. (100/10) * 3000 = 30,000
After the addon 3000 more chips to 10000 chips would only equal 13,000 chips, I would do an add on generally if it got me to 30,000 chips in a 100 player tourney in this example.

I also keep in mind generally a third of the players will not do an addon, so I would get an advantage doing an addon, as long as there is the normal 10-20% of field getting paid. If my full house got beat by quads earlier in the game, I might feel I am a good player and just suffered a bad beat, so I might stay in if I was still on tilt.

It takes 2 years to learn to talk, but a lifetime to learn when to shut up.

I always add on. It equals a few less steal attempts which may go pear shaped.

to me this is kinda of icm decision(chip mode) if the extra chips increase your tournament equity by an amt that makes it worth it then you do it if not then you dont

the other consideration is what kind of stack depth you are left with ie how many bbs .....then i think you want around 20bbs at least so you have decent resteal size stack.... if you rebuy to get to a stack depth of around 8 blinds for example thats just a coin flip from tourney exit
