    Default SNG study groups

After the initial interest in my staking thread, lets get some ideas going for study groups for the sng forum. I think we should have a low stakes group and a mid/higher stakes group. I think meeting up 1 or 2 times a week would not be too difficult for most people. Lets get some ideas kicking around for how to set this up.

My personal preference would be to have a group of 4-5 people with at least one other people at or above your skill level. Swapping out histories and thoeries via a chat room or i guess maybe vent(never liked the mic thing after seeimg my roommate with the headset and LMAO) would be a decent idea.
I want to particulary study ICM more than anything else, so my focus would be in that aspect of the game.

    Other ideas comments welcome.

I think it is an awesome idea...and I can see this picking up very well. If manageble it would be possible even cool to get that same group in a SNG together and then go over HH's afterwards.

The mix of people above and below your level has to be good...so you learn from not only different experiences but also different point of views and playstyles that change throughout the levels.

If one group gets too big. I would like to start a second. If not I would like to join in the first.

I'm rebuilding my bankroll and have done very respectably in sngs. But I am going to need to be really good at them when I start learning limit since I plan on having them be my main source of income while I dump loads over at the fixed limit tables.

trik, do you see this group being purely player helping player. Or do you have some sort of 'lesson plan' or ideas on things to discuss?

I know you said ICM obviously but I would even so much as suggest detailed study on poker literature, most likely in our cases HoH1/2 since there isn't much more directed at NLHE SNG's.

Just trying to think up things to go over, since getting into a chat room and swapping hand histories truly isnt much different than posting your SNG history for comment on the forum. Something definite to study and discuss would seemingly be neccessary...and also I will stick to the idea that the group should get into a SNG together and play it out.

I think it would be a huge learning experience to be able to discuss both sides of hands with the groups and go over what is +/- EV....playing styles and reasonings behind moves. I could see people being able to help more by being involved and somewhat invested into the discussion.

And if there are multiple groups it brings about the possibilities for some healthy competition. Almost like a FTR SNG League.

Imagine a few "teams" of SNG players working with eachother to get better, and proving their growth and skill by competing with others. Hell you could set up a season and playoffs...it could be like a FTR SNG Gauntlet. That would be damn cool. 10 teams...1 person per team representing their team in a SNG. Perhaps having a couple heads up matches here or there to work on other aspects of the SNG's...I am rambling now. But that is something I would certainly sign up for. Shit...im ready to get started now...there has to be a way that could be managed.

    collusion

For me personally, I dont see this helping me by laying out a lesson plan. I have also read hoh1/2 and think it will help but its not the sng bible, but an active discussion on a few of the topics would be good.

I think doing this in a chat room is more hands on than just posting hands here.

I really dont think it will be hard to find topics to talk about though, this would come natural.

and also I will stick to the idea that the group should get into a SNG together and play it out.
    collusion

that is all....man i love this post texture.......

Sounds like a good idea, if I can work it out with the time difference (I am at GMT+2) I would join

I'd be very interested in this from a novice standpoint. I've built my Bankroll from $50 to over $200 twice now (after cashing out to buy an Xbox) playing only $5 SnG's sporatically- yeah, I didn't have any concept of BR management until I joined the site. I'm just under $250 for my SnG BR and would like to finally move up to $10 tables (although I hear the play isn't much different from teh $5). I think I'd be a pretty good guinea pig.

Specifically, I'd like to learn to multitable better and learn better bubble play, especially when one player is running away with all the chips.

If we make it a once or twice a week thing, I'm sure I could find the time for that. I'm Central Time Zone.

I posted my interest in the original thread. I am in, Illinois, CST (GMT-6?). I am getting into low level SNGs and took a break after tilting a bit busting out on the bubble of a 10+1.

After which I proceeded to drop $25 in about 20 minutes on the .25/50 NL table trying to "build my 'roll back up" punctuated by a river AI call with KK. So after $200 deposit my account sits at about $60 while I study up. An SNG study group would be terrific and greatly appreciated.

I only play Turbo SnG's just due to time, maybe that can be branched off into another group if there's enough of us.

I don't understand your collusion statement to the "teams" thing. How would a SNG made up of 1 person from each "team" be collusion? You are not giving anyone any extra info or giving anyone preferential treatment...you are your only representative from your team trying to win.

    Explain please trik.

Maybe other players outside the game offering advice over IM or something....

But that's kind of lame considering we'd all be trying to learn from our own play after the fact in a round table discussion, the point of the excerise wouldn't be straight competition.

The only downside of team members playing each other is that instead of playing at a table with a majority of fish/bad players, it's a stacked $10 table with all people who have a solid/better than average understanding of the game , so I would think the play itself would not be a good representation of what you'd see at a typical table at that level- but maybe that's a good thing....
  13. #13
Can FTR set up private SnG's? That would be ideal. Otherwise the site being played on will red flag the same people at the same table all the time against random fish and ban everyone.

I'd be up for a study group, though my schedule for the rest of eternity is pretty filled. I'm doing the $55s and slowly moving into the $109s at stars.

Time wise: it'd pretty much have to be evenings for me. I'm in CST time zone (GMT-6)
    I run a training site...

    it was a joke..............

Oh come on now...this is no place for a sense of humor. =)

But I do see the point of a group of people taking poor random fishies buyins...hopefully could be done via some sort of private tourney though.

    Anyways just an idea...seemed fun.

As for times the evenings are likely going to be better for most people...I worry that people not in the USA are going to have some issues..perhaps if needed a euro group could be done to accomodate.

Could probably log the discussions as well for other people to read if they are in other groups.

    What we could do:

    Make a list of people
    I.e.
    Rilla
    Gabe
    Vqc
    Jmontis
    Trik
    Rubix

Sort those people into skill level
    I.e.
    Rilla Gabe Trik
    VQC
    Chardrian
    =D

Everyone gets together in groups of 2 or 3, one from each level.
This would be good becuase the best players might not need as much help as the lower players, but being able to explain things would help the better players out alot to in defining to themselves whyt hey make certain plays.

    So my group woudl be
Rilla Gabe Trik Me =D (Stealing all the talent)
Swap 1 HH Every 2 days Min.

Or we could always have topic of the day
I.e. Playing out of hte blinds
Playing mid lwo pocket pairs for a profit wihtout hitting a set.
Hitting a two apir on the turn
Flopping a Set with a Flush draw

    So on and so forth.

Of course most of these topics would be best served in the early levels. Once it gets to 50/100 and 75/150 its all calling ranges and ICM. Or so I think

    Now im just rambling

I do like my list of topics tho
I really need work on those.

I call first pick on people
It should be like a fantasy draft!

May I suggest we all watch say my 4 tables of sngs while on vent together and then talk about every descision?
  24. #24
    I got an idea....

    Lets say 5 people.

    1 person joins a SNG
4 Watch and debate/give advice/criticize moves that he made.

We can write down or remember any problems we had while examining the SnG and debate it in more detail after, possibly open up another forum for this....

I wanna be part of this, it sounds ill.

You can post a HH and get that. I like the group SnG idea better. Put me in a mid level group

I'm definately interested if I can work into a group meeting during the times I am available.

I personally like the idea of having topics of discussion to focus on each week. Like Week1:Bubble Play, Week2:Playing ITM, Week3:Changing Gears etc...

I would be up for this. But I work fairly odd hours.

If this falls in to the 9:30am -> 2:00pm GMT bracket whilst I'm in the office, then sign me up, I need something to do other than read these forums and play poker on my other PC Work? Pah...!

I'm in...when where how? I'd prefer to have the SNGs on Pacific or party since those sites are tax free for me...but I guess I could drag myself back to pokerstars or wherever ya'll want to play.
  37. #37
I'd like to be involved as well, part of the beginners group (i'm still on the 5.5s and 11s on PS).

I really like the idea of small groups watching one player in an SNG and discussing the decision making along with him/her. If anyone here is familiar with Skype, www.skype.com, I think it would make a great tool for discussion.

My post bump was moreso to inquire as to when we are starting this up...instead just got a bunch more people who want in but waiting for someone to do something lol. We have someone leading this on...i figured trik but now not sure?

This is my first post, and I am new to the board, so I understand if I can't get in this, but I would absolutely love too.

I have learned so much from this board in the last month. It's a great place and hopefully I can do some contributing myself.

Anyways, sounds like a lot of talk and not much actual action going down. So, I say we start picking teams. However its gonna go down we need to get into some groups I think 4-5 people per group, then each group can decide how they wanna run things. Of course we can talk between groups and stuff, but for now lets try to get 2 or 3 groups who can then have there own meeting time and place. I am starting a new thread, please come to it and sign-up.
