Trimmed tourny.

    Default Trimmed tourny.

This is my first tourny to post. I know I made mistakes, but the table was incredibly weak. A couple of the hands were very read dependent, and most likely marginal calls or bets. There were also a few small blinds that I could have raised but opted not to, as to not look overly aggressive, even though I did raise a sb with 2 4. Mainly I would like to know what button hands I could have gotten away with raising, and whether or not being as aggressive as I was on a weak table going to get me into more trouble than good.
And any other constructive criticism would also be welcomed.

    Hand 1: open shove flop.

Hand 2: the flop c/r is fine i guess but i probably bet less on the turn. make someone pay to draw dead :P

Hand 3: thats a pretty big raise pf, ur not gonna get action too often if u raise that much. i like 240ish. thats also a pretty dry board, u could bet 500-600 and get the rest in on the turn but shoving works against bad people lol.

Hand 8: kinda risky leading out here, i c/f this flop.

Hand 15: pretty good flop. why so much?

Hand 19: not the best river card to bluff at, maybe im just a tight ass.

Hand 23: too risky. just muck.

Hand 24: dont minraise. shoving calling and folding are all good.

hand 33: if he minraises i think im calling here.

i think u should work on ur bet sizing, ur losing out on value on some of those hands (KQ, KK, 67)

also when blinds get bigger, raising 2.5 bbs does the same as 3 bbs. cept you save some cheese if u get repushed.

Overall I think you played well, your preflop hand selection and positional awareness were both good as was your aggression.

Probably the only general pieces of advice from this tourney:
    - When you're raising after limper, add a BB to your raise for each limper compared to what you would open raise.
    - 2.5x BB open raise is usually sufficient once blinds hit 50/100. Saves you some chips if you have to give up
    - Anytime opps have ~10x BB or less in their stack or the chips in the pot are 15% or more of either your stack or your opps' stack (whichever is less) just shove it rather than standard raising.
    - There were probably a few other hands you could have open raised since opps seemed to be quite weak/tight on the bubble, I pointed them out in the comments.

    2. 76s - bet the flop for like 70-80 or so. With so many players seeing the flop, at least one opp will call your bet allowing you to build a big pot with your big hand.

    3. KK - good, nh

    8. Q6o - I check and call with odds with your OESD rather than leading. With one opp in the hand I can see a semi-bluff here but not with four.

    7 A CO (M = 35.67; f+f+F) (between 8 and 9) - with your stack I raise this one

    11. K7o - with your stack I raise him back, make it 350 to go. If he calls, at least you have position on the flop.

    12. KQo - minor point, but once blinds hit 50/100 I make it 2.5x BB rather than 3x, saves you some chips if you have to give up either preflop or on the flop.

    15. KQo - with the limper in front, raise a little more, say 500 to go. Also, maybe you can bet 2/3 pot on the flop, that still gives opp incorrect odds to chase a draw but might get calls from hands you beat like A8 or worse kings.

    16. T9o - with your stack and the short stack pretty short, put him all in preflop.

    3 K SB (M = 27.78; f+f+F) (between 16 and 17) - I raise this for sure

7 Q BU (M = 27.44; f+F) (also between 16 and 17) - if the short stack in the BB wasn't quite so short I would raise this one too, but the problem here is that you'd be priced in to call if he did

    17. A7s - perfect

    18. 42o - it's fine, particularly if you have a read that the BB is tight

    T K UTG (M = 30.11; F) (between 18 and 19) - I raise this
    2Heart JDiamond SB (M = 21.92; f+f+F) - and this
    3Heart KDiamond BU (M = 21.58; f+F) - and if I didn't raise the other hands I definitely raise this

    19. AJo - 700 preflop, but whatever. Flop c-bet is good, and I actually like the river bet; too often I just check it down and lose the pot on showdown, so I like this (it's very scary for opp because of the shortstack).

    6 K BU (M = 26.25; f+F) (between 19 and 20) - raise

    21. KQo - wow, that's a scary flop for you, but you have to bet it for sure.

    22. J7s - I don't hate your lead but if opps realise you donkbet the flop every time you're first in you'll get no credit after a while

    23. AKo - with 675 chips already in the pot preflop, I just shove it preflop rather than standard raising. If you are going to standard raise then make it at least 900-1000 (adding a BB for each limper) and shoving the flop if you miss. I am honestly not sure that I would have called the shove over, although you were correct on this occasion I think it's a losing play overall as you're behind his likely range.

    24. K6o - min re-raise is completely pointless here. Either fold (my preferred option) or flat call and get it AI on a K high flop

    27. AQo - 700 preflop, and on a relatively dry (draw free) board I would go for a check-raise if opp has been aggressive postflop. Also, don't show - keep them guessing.

    28. 44 - shove it since opp has ~10x BB

    29. KJo - as per 28, shove preflop. As played I would probably fold to the min 3-bet since opp is never folding after putting half his stack in the pot.

    34. A8o - you can c-bet the flop, I wouldn't necessarily check behind just because the flop is monotone

    35. Q8o - I take it that you were going for the check-raise on the flop - I like it. On the turn, lead bet is good but after opp raises just shove over. You're pot committed and so is opp and you'd hate to see an ace fall on the river.

Taipan, I would just shove AQo in Hand 27.

Thanks for the replies. I know I need to work on bet sizing and the 2.5bb raise.

I bet here to price my hand. If I don't opp will probably shove and take down the pot. Obviously I am looking for a fold, but don't want it to look that way. This hand was just as scary for me, as is was for him I am sure, and my most memorable hand from the game.

Read dependent. I was looking for a shove over by him pre flop. His c/r on the flop just felt like "I am tired of being bullied". I admit that I should have folded, but I didn't want to give the impression that I could be bullied either. I keep coming back to this hand in my mind, and I think it was probably my worst play of the game.

First hand heads up. Just wanted to send a message that a min raise isn't enough. He didn't min raised again.

Sometimes habits die hard, I came out betting before I even knew what I was doing. Then kicked myself in the butt for not getting anything from him.

I'm not sure I understand why. I can't help but think that a shove here shows I have a strong hand. I haven't open shoved anything yet, and with my stack there is no reason for opp to believe that I would be bluffing to blind steal. Maybe this would be as good as spot as any to start open shoving, but I can't help but think I am going to get a couple of folds before he calls, and I didn't mind a call on this hand.
  7. #7
Well, for one I think that there's not much difference between standard raising +cbetting and shoving. If you raise to $700 as taipan suggests, he calls and then you cbet a bricked flop, you're pretty much committed if he check-raises anyway.

I'm interested in hearing why Taipan would wanna play postflop poker here as he's the one guy who seems to shove more than me.

Yeah, looking at hand 27 again, I probably just shove it preflop considering the chips already in the pot.
