    Default Salads

At the risk of sounding gay for asking about salad, here goes.

I know about the obvious health benefits of eating salads for lunch/dinner but I recently read in an article about the benefits of salad for breakfast. Yeah it sounds gross at first but now that I think about it, I don't really eat breakfast (hate cereal) so this might be something to try. I'm back at school now so I'm relying on my own chef knowledge of what to put in a salad, etc which is very limited. I'd like to hear from you guys on what you use, anything from normal to outrageous ingredients.

I realize this is the comm forum and I'd make fun of a dude who posted this so flame away. All jokes involving salad tossing etc are welcome, I'd just appreciate a few good posts too.

I eat a fruit salad in the morning once in a while. Strawberries, honeydew, watermelon, cantelope, banano, mango and some grapes. Chopped up (except the grapes) and ready to go. All I do is sprinkle some sugar on top if I want extra sweetness.

try Ken's Northern Italian Lite salad dressing. i dont like lite or fat free salad dressings, but this one is awesome. its about as close as it gets to olive gardens italian dressing.

nothing gay about salads. i'm pretty sure they're asexual.

    leaf selection:
if you're just getting into salads, i would suggest starting w/ mixed greens or spinach. iceberg lettuce just isn't tasty enough to eat every single day. spinach is MUCH better for you than iceberg and mixed greens have a more robust flavor range.

dressings: are best used lightly and mixed in, not just dumped on top of the salad. the trick is to use as little dressing as possible, just enough to lightly coat the majority of greens but not enough to get lumps or pockets of it stuck on a single leaf. there is a sweet spot there, and it's less than you think at first. my favorite is really simple: per serving, 1 tblspoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar and a squeeze of lemon. throw your salad in a covered bowl w/ these three ingredients and shake it up.

    other ingredients:

for cheeses, standard shredded varieties are fine, but also try out some crumble cheeses like gorgonzola or feta as well. you want to compliment your cheese w/ nuts and fruit too. a current favorite of mine would be like a gorgonzola w/ crushed walnuts and some pear or mandarin orange slices on top.

i just had one this weekend w/ spinach, craisins (like raisins but cranberries instead of grapes), sliced almonds, bleu cheese and a pretty good champagne vinaigrette. it was tasty.

    my girlfriend's favorite is:
spinach w/ a poppyseed vinaigrette, chopped walnuts, and chopped strawberries.

many people enjoy crushed pepper on most salads as well, but that is to taste.

don't get like Kraft Blue Cheese, go for the real crumbles instead, it's worth it.

i also prefer smaller biscotti style breadsticks over croutons (like the long narrow ones that look like straws), but croutons are great in a good caesar salad.

good luck on the salad exploration.
In answer to your question... it depends...

I'm enjoying the enthusiam you guys are replying with. TY. With that said, I'm definately planning on buyinig some crumble blue cheese and gorgonzola. Here's a question. Where are these crumble cheeses in the grocery store? Around the normal cheese? I tend to get lost in grocery stores except in alcohol sections. Go figure.

They're in the "Gay Food" aisle--"Normal" cheeses are scared of them. Good luck making your big, flaming, gay, fruity, queer, gay salad.

I'm a carnivore. Salads are no good unless they have some kind of animal in them. I personally like salad with ham, turkey, mushrooms, tomato, cheddar, monterey jack, boiled eggs, bleu cheese, black olives, and croutons, covered with so much ranch dressing you can't see the lettuce....

I didn't feel like reading the other posts. This is what I like:

Greens - romaine, I don't like un-cooked spinach. Iceberg sucks, there is almost no nutritional value.

Toppings - I like cheese. I use mozzarella or cheddar (or both).
Chopping up a hard-boiled egg adds sustenance to it (screw the trans fat cholesterol fearing junkies, I like eggs and they have lots of vitamins and protein. Although you get enough protein from your "hobby").
Shrimp - super good for you (frozen shrimp isn't that great but pretty cheap)
Pepperoni - Hormel makes a spicy pepperoni flavored with Tabasco. Yummy

    {EDIT: dressing - I made my own for awhile. Olive oil, vineger and standard itallian spices; basil, oregeno, garlic}

Good List. Also... salmon, beans (black beans, chick peas, etc.), and corn.

I use to eat salads all the time... I've gotten progressively lazier though. Salads are good but it takes a little prep work to make them plus it's a lot of chewing to eat them. Now I just throw a bunch of fruits and vegetables in the blender with a couple scoops of protein powder and drink it. It's actually pretty tasty too. Like for lunch I had 1 stalk celery, 1 carrot, 1/2 apple, 1/2 orange, 1 roma tomato, 1 peach, ~1 cup frozen fruit(mixed berries, pineapple, melon, grapes), 1/2 cup milk and chocolate protein powder. To go with it I had a pita with some hummus. You can basically consume an entire's day worth of fruits/vegetables and fiber in about 10 seconds. Sometimes I'll make one after I work out and drink half and save the other half for breakfast.

I'm a big fan of the Greek salads with cucumbers, feta cheese, and Kalamata olives. Spinach salads are good too. A few more things I sometimes put in salads are roasted red peppers, pine nuts, raisins, carrots, avocados, cilantro, and garlic (not all of them in the same salad obv). My favorite dressing is two parts olive oil, one part Dijon mustard, one part balsamic vinegar, mixed with fresh basil leaves. Delicious.

If there's a certain ingredient you really like, you can go to www.epicurious.com and do a search for recipes containing that ingredient. You can set it to only search for salads if that's what interests you. I pretty much get all of my recipes from that website, it's really an incredible site.

I highly recommend learning to cook if you care about eating healthy food that tastes good. It's not really very hard at all, you just have to find recipes that look like they'd taste good, and follow the directions. If you put a little bit of effort into it, it's not hard to make food that tastes better than what you can get at 95% of restaurants IMO.

salads are like jerking off, you can have a lot of fun if you get really creative with them.

The problem is, if anyone were to see you enjoying these with a creative twist they would surely think youre a homofag.

Nope, too much sugar. That's my little sister's favorite though, should I be worried?
