What to begin with

I've played decent amount of poker and played quite a bit of real money but seem to bust a good amount of times. Anyways i'm going at it once agian but starting small($40) and work my way up and build profit. My question is do i play SNG's straight till i work my roll up so i can be safe to play MTT's since your not always going to hit big and cash games(6 max) or do i play w/e i want with my $40 as long as i stay in my bankroll? So basically set small goals and stick with them untill i can hit my true goal?

Start with the microlimit SnG's- they are fun and easier to lear with because you need to get good at preflop and flop betting mostly. The later streets come up more often in cash games.

Play $1.20 SnGs on Stars until you have around $70 then play the $3.40s. When you have over $100 you can play the $5.50s. Don't play MTTs until you have 100 buyins for the stakes you decide to play. So if you wanna play the $3.30 MTTs, you should have around $300 in your BR.

one thing's for sure... with $40 you'd better start small...very small. or you'll go busto again. i suspect that's why you went bust before...

Whatever courtie said, if you start with a small bankroll stick to the single table Sng or two table max, don't go for the 45 people one.

You can also play the freeroll MTTs, it will provide you with MTT experience with a possible small cash prize that will help you build your bankroll

I don't think you're giving us quite enough info in the initial post.

You mention a "true goal" - what is it? Money, expertise, the ability to play at a higher level, or just to break even and have fun?

It's hard to advise you when we don't know much about what you play and why. I assume, since you've bust multiple times, you've been playing out of your bankroll - as everyone above says, this is the 1st thing to address. With $40, the only things you can play are $0.01/$0.02NL, or $1 SNGs.

But you don't mention whether you prefer cash or tourney play? I am assuming the latter, as you seem to want to head towards making MTTs your main game. In which case, SNGs are probably the way to go, and certainly they give you the most practice with the least risk.

But if you want to become a good poker player, then you'll need good post-flop skills too, so maybe cash games are the answer - there is also more opportunity to up your roll playing cash, by and large. We can't really tell how skilful you are; decent ABC poker should pwn the micro-stakes but if you're not sure about the fundamentals, reading and learning alongside playing will be essential to get away from any early bad habits.

Other advice of a more general nature; don't play when tired, angry or drunk; make sure you understand probability, and why bad beats are a good thing; make sure you recognise when you go on tilt, and are able to back off; don't play more tables than you're comfortable with, but equally, if you're finding one tabling too slow, try adding another. If you play cash, download poker tracker's trial version and learn how it works.

there is only a "suggested bankroll," not a required one. i'm sure you knew that, but its generally accepted at >20 buy-ins. so for $2 (.01/.02), you're looking at a $40+ roll. and for $5, $100.
