    Default The Tao of Poker

Everything that will be written in here will be factual. You won't be seeing much of my usual brb bbq shenanananigans in this thread, so if you clicked on this thread because you want me to make gay jokes about you, go away. haha but seriously, if you spam this thread I will fuck your shit up, the whole reason why I'm not posting this here instead of in the community forum is because it is a zoo in there and I don't want this thread to get trashed. This is my way of keeping my thoughts organized, to track my progress, and to share some of my personal philosophies relating to poker. It is also an attempt to put some structure in my life, as odd as that may sound. Some may call this a blog but I will not, because I hate using made up internet words that debase the English language.

Now that I have that out of the way I will get started.

I am a 21-year old college dropout living in Humboldt County, which is about a 5 hour drive north of San Francisco. I moved out here for college from the east coast, and spent my freshman year living in the dorms getting fucked up, not going to class, and raiding my roommate's fridge.

School gets out, summer comes around, and I'm kinda stuck in between places. I end up having to move into this shithole of an apartment for the summer. A few weeks in the place gets its electricity shut off, by no fault of mine. So naturally I start spending more time at my neighbor's place, instead of sitting in the fucking dark at my place. Now the guy who lived in the basement of this house played at Party Poker. Before I met this guy I didn't even know what hold'em was, but after he let me play some SNGs on his computer I knew that this was something I had to get good at. On an interesting note, the guy who introduced me to hold'em was a gas station attendant during the night, and a horrible poker player by day. Every day he grew paler, balder, more broke, and more bitter. He was the archetypal degenerate gambler and I grew to despise the man. Looking back though, had I not met this man I would in all likelyhood never have started playing online poker and would be living a different life right now.

So I put $50 into a PartyPoker account and started playing low-stakes SNGs and micro-stakes limit. I lose about three or four hundred dollars by the end of the summer, and then I stop playing because I couldn't handle the losses. I pick it back up in January of 2005 when my finances are replenished and start playing micro NL. I start winning so I start gradually moving up in stakes. By August I'm a winning player at 2/4 NL. After sophomore year I decide that college was getting me nowhere slow so I tell my parents to fuck off, move up to 5/10 NL, and start playing some real fucking poker.

9 months later I'm sitting here at my computer, blazed as usual, reflecting on how far I've come since the days of .25/.50 limit, and where I am going from here.

My personal philosophy when it comes to poker is evolve or die. Once my game starts to stagnate, whether it be out of lack of drive or lack of ability, I am done with poker. Once I reach that limit, there is simply no reason for me to continue playing poker, and PO$$E$$ED shall be no more. Until that day, I will continue to post at this site.

I am staking two friends right now. One of them, who I shall refer to as The Phenom from here on out, is a kid I found at a home game, playing unbelievably tight poker against unbelievably drunk and bad blayers. He is currently raping the Party Poker 100 NL playing tight as shit. I am elated to be staking this guy, as he is a proven winner who cleared 5 digits last year playing live poker.

The other kid I shall refer to as The Project. He is my roommate, and he sucks balls at poker but somehow he has donked his way upwards. I don't even understand how he does it; he likes to make horrible plays when I'm watching, does stupid shit like buy-in to a 1000 NL game with a third of his bankroll (of course he gets stacked a few minutes in), but at the end of the week he's always up. I have this theory that he has guys he meets on the poker site transfer him funds to have cyber sex with them, but this has yet to be verified. hahaha I hope he's reading this, that motherfucker.

One last thing- I don't have a bankroll, I have a liferoll. I pay for everything out of my liferoll, as it is my only asset. It is different from a bankroll in that I am constantly withdrawing funds from it to pay bills and such. Poker is my only investment, so if I go busto I am truly done for.

“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich.”
    -Lao Tzu

Interesting post. How much B&M action do you take in? Or are you primarily an online player?

Any ambitions to become a live cash/tourney player in the future? You're already an online professional, if poker's your only income. Seems a natural progression.

And with the possibility of an online ban in the US, brick and mortar may be the way to go.

Not at the moment. I may make a trip down to the Bay or L.A. this summer to play some poker, I will let you know when I do.

I haven't been playing much poker the last few weeks. It's been getting harder putting in the hours lately, particularly after losing sessions.

I'm leaving for Germany tomorrow, and I will likely not be playing any poker until I get back. I am looking forward to this break from poker, weed, and all things American. I will also try to start meditating daily while abroad. All I know is that, I am playing much less than I should be, even though my poker is better than ever. To put it bluntly, I have made enough to live comfortably for the next few years without working (probably even longer if I invest). That fact combined with the burnout/existential depression I am experiencing is leading me to severely underperform.

I know that I can make a nice living playing poker. But so what? Do I really want to make a living playing poker? Do I even have a passion for poker anymore? These are questions I can't answer right now, and that is why I will be going away for a while.

I don't want to spend my time making money; I want to spend my time living life.

Much like many other things, there is no one style that prevails at poker. TAG poker is not inherently better than LAG poker, nor vice versa. In any given situation, I try to play what comes naturally. I go with the flow. I try to make myself devoid of emotion and try to act purely based on what I perceive.
I would have liked to write more on this subject, but I'm tired, so I will expound on the things I talked about in this post when I get back. For those who actually follow this thread, I apologize for the half-ass post. I will leave you all with a personal quote.

I just read your post for the first time. Being from Cali originally - Advice to yah ... If you are bored... Move dude.. Somewhere else.. Its almost like your getting burned out. Dont get me wrong H-County ... The Bay Area... All nice in my opinion. You need to experience different shit. Get out and live with your phat ass life roll. You gotta figure something out soon though.. That money isnt going to last forever. I think you are in your early twenties and this is a critical time for thoughts about life and who you are. You will break yorself in two thinking about shit like this.. Who am I , What am I , What am I going to be, yadda yadda. Being 29 and going through all this shit .. I can finally say .. This is me , this is who Iam , this is what I do. Im not bothered by shit anymore. Pick up and try and start a life somewhere else, figure out what you want and be thankful you have that kinda money to stabilize your life while you figure it out. You are in no way behind in life.. So dont think that ever. You are where you are suppose to be. Hope that helped.. I wish you luck.

I haven't posted in this thread for a while now. I haven't really played poker since I got back from the World Cup. I played a short session today, played horrible. I don't know if I have it in me to keep playing.

What it comes down to is that I have lost the will to do anything. The well has run dry. I have no idea what I'm doing here or where I'm going.

I think I will be going away for a while. I've shared and learned a lot about poker on FTR, and have had many good laughs here. But the time has come. triptan, gabe, 'rilla, bigred, lukie, muxy, warpe, midas, boost, xxxianti and everyone else that I've shot the shit with, y'all keep it real.

Oh I forgot to mention Fnord- although I've never really talked to the guy I've read a lot of his posts and learned a lot from him when I was starting out. He knows what he's talking about and probably gives the best feedback on this site when it comes to NL hold'em. So yea, thank you Fnord for making me rich.

    POSSESSED,
If I,too, may quote wise philosophers:

"Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see..."

    "That suicide is painless
    It brings on many changes
And you can take or leave it if you choose"

"The game of life is hard to play,
    You're gonna loose it anyway
The losing card you're gonna lay
So this is all I have to say..."

    "That suicide is painless
    It brings on many changes
And you can take or leave it if you choose"
    --Robert Altman and Johnny Mandell

Get over the angst!! Don't take yourself, or life, so damn seriously. You've got your fifties for all that shit! (believe me)

Hey this is PO$$E$$ED, how have y'all been doing. I moved to a new apartment last week so I can log on to FTR again. I'm back in school and I'm also playing poker once again. The cards haven't been falling but I've been playing well.

I am getting past my disillusionment with life and coming to terms with the world as it is. I'm beginning to look beyond myself and starting to see the big picture. Although the big picture is looking quite grim, I've decided to stay around to watch it all unfold. Some may call it morbid fascination, others may call it hope. Come what may, I would like to be here to see it.

To Rome said Nero: "If to smoke you turn
I shall not cease to fiddle while you burn."
To Nero Rome replied: "Pray do your worst,
'Tis my excuse that you were fiddling first.
