laptop/TV question

Is this the correct cable to make my laptop work on my tv?

Laptop only has vga or s-video output, TV is a 42in panasonic plasma which doesn't have a VGA input sockett. I just wanna play movies on my laptop and watch them on my tv. Open to better ideas if you have any.

Well it obviously depends on sockets on your TV. So if you have a SCART socket it should work. Take a peek behind your TV.
Now, I'm only not sure how idiot proof is your graphic card, but setting up should be fairly simple. You plug it in, you open Display Properties, and set proper resolution. You should also extend desktop to that screen if it didn't happen already.

Have scart of course. That's what I thought. But read somewhere that it's not that simple and a vga to scaret cable won't necessarily work. I dunno, being thick.

Ow ye, just read a bit, it seems it may not be that simple. It seems there is a difference between SCART-to-VGA and VGA-to-SCART cables. And those who should send output from laptops are usually designed for projectors. If you want it to work on TV you should prolly design some kind of converter.
But you should still try it. Supposedly it works well with some graphic card + tv combinations.

You should check if your TV has DVI connector. I think VGA-DVI cable might work, but you probably won't be able to listen to sound on TV.

If it's just for a presentation or something, you can use vga, but it's far from optimal.

if you have an dvi or hdmi out and hdmi in on your screen, then use that. If it's for a home tv setup and your laptop doesn't have a digital output then you might want to invest a couple of dollars in one of those thin clients that you can connect to your tv that can access network drives like this one.

And this goes for all low range digital cables: get the cheapest one you can find. It makes no difference.

I just want to watch movies from my laptop on my tv.

The TV has hdmi in, but the laptop only has s-video which is shit as far asw I understand it, and VGA, which seems to be my best option. |But as the TV is a plasma, apparently when they were being made they dedided to get rid of the VGA input socket due to the image burn issues which were highly likely if linking to a compluter.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I don't really wanna spend 80 bucks, happy enough to just use a VGA to scart cable and then another cable for sound (I'm assuming), as long as the picture is ok and the there's no lag with the sound, which is something I have heard people complan about, but not sure what setup they were using.

I am not a home cinemaphile or something. The result will just not be very good. The vga out is an analogue signal. So you have the digital signal from your laptop being converted into analogue internally with a crt screen in mind, then you put it into the analogue-in of your plasma TV which goes into a cheap A/D converter. The result will be comparable to VHS or analogue TV.


About the sound lag: VLC player can delay the sound in any direction with the +/- keys.

It's the G and H keys. +/- is for speed.
