I am not a home cinemaphile or something. The result will just not be very good. The vga out is an analogue signal. So you have the digital signal from your laptop being converted into analogue internally with a crt screen in mind, then you put it into the analogue-in of your plasma TV which goes into a cheap A/D converter. The result will be comparable to VHS or analogue TV.
About the sound lag: VLC player can delay the sound in any direction with the +/- keys.
