I've seen that play quite a bit. You hope someone gets top pair and you take a big pot from him. I've done it once or twice in the small blind when everyone folded to me.

I played one hand in a 5 max game where I raised preflop with 8-8, got reraised and I called. On the flop I hit my set, and bizarrely this guy was only check-calling my large bets. On the river he hits his set of aces and wins.
