Wanting to push him around is a good thing, and maybe you could have gotten him to call you with a weaker pair but what I think you're really looking for in this situation is a fold.
He may very well have called with A9. Even T9 or J9 or even K4o I could see >.>

I agree, however, smoothcalling the flop and giving the free card was a terrible play.
