Theyre both really off-time. I've played percussion for fucking 9 years and no matter what anyone tells you, always use a click-track especially when working with layers.

Each song is recorded in god knows how many layers using a fostex digital recorder I picked up cheap used on craigslist. I love it. After recording I just dumped it via USB to Audacity which is a freeware wav editor. No fancy mixing so thats why theres a bunch of clipping. Also, I'm lazy.

The guitar on both of those was your standard electric/acoustic Ibanez PFsomethin tuned in DADGAD to give it that ethereal kinda sound. I just picked up a Celebrity Ovation which I'm totally in love with and will be featured heavily in my next ones. I might even put some electric in the next ones but theres something so awesome about acoustic percussion and acoustic guitars together.

The drums were both real and fake - real Cajon (yes, I know what cajones are, youre not funny, and youre not the first one to think of it) a real Udu and a real Djembe. All amazing drums which I'll take to my grave. I used electric percussion for everything else which I think was bongos, congas, and egg-shaker. My e-percussion rig is just about to get a lot better and I'm really excited about it.

The actual recording process is really a pain in the ass. I'm not good with working with layers. Step one is to record the basic drumbeat on the digital recorder. Then I dump that into audacity via USB port, save it as a wav. Then I clear the memory on the recorder, hit record, hit play on the desktop and record the next track while listening to the old one coming out of the PC. When finished recording, I dump the wav file onto the PC again and then use audacity to line the two wav files together. Repeat entire process for each layer. Being even a little bit off is pretty devestating and its pretty tedius but it works. Would be much easier if I played to a click track.

So yeah for those I started with a basic drum beat and just added more and more drums and then guitar. For a 'normal' song with more standard 4/4 drums I'd do guitar first and then drums.

Thanks for the comments. I wish I had a band.

When I first read this thread, my next question was actually going to be "Do you have a band?" But you already answered it. If you answer was no, my follow-up statement was going to be "you should get one".

I have a roommate that is really into music and composes a lot of his own stuff (I'm not sure what program(s) he uses to aid him). Anyway, he did his own thing for several years, but he always wanted a band. Recently he found out some of his friends play instruments, and he's trying to form a band (and it's working -- everyone is excited about it).

I'm not sure where I'm going with this post, because I'm kind of drunk, but my main point was supposed to be one of encouragement.

Nice, I like it a lot!

No matter what anyone tells you, the fact that they're slightly out of time is a good thing, it gives it more of a "live" feel and adds to the rhythm.

If you can in your audio editor, I suggest you pan some of the tracks (quite delicately) to give your music more space.

Hehe thanks. Yeah I'd love one but I'm just having a horrible time finding one. If I could find a singer I'd be incredibly happy as I can play every instrument except sing so atleast I could do some studio-work with a singer. But everytime I get someone who responds to my craigslist ad, they flake out and never show up or just disappear. It sucks. So my new approach is now just make the music and put it out there without vocals and see if someone who can sing likes it enough to try and sing over it or write more stuff alongside me. Not having a band is an endless frustration for me because writing music is really something I feel I excel at and I really love doing.

Eh, its *really* out of time, but I think hid it well. When I realized it was so off is when I added the egg-shaker to keep the beat When working with tracks if one track is slightly off and then you build off of that track, well the next one will be off too. It compounds.

Nope audacity only deals with mono .wav files. I'm looking into procuring a less-than-legal copy of *insert whatever good audio editor I can find* from a buddy of mine.

Thanks for the comments. I'll probably record some more this afternoon, more "standard" hard rock.
