Default SnG study session (Sunday 6th March, 4pm ET, 9pm GMT)

I think this has been done in the past. Wondering if anyone's interested in getting some sessions of SnGs going and follow up with discussing anything throughout the games. We would have to find out what site people are playing on, what stakes their playing and what times they are generally free to play. then maybe set up some groups from their. I think having some of the regs. would be really great. I'm just spit balling here if any one has any ideas on how this could work i think this could be really beneficial for anyone trying to improve their SnG game.

I'm currently playing 11+1 turbo's on FT. But I'm up for playing any where from $1 to $20,

I'd be interested, but currently playing $3.40s on Pokerstars and in UK time, so the logistics may be tricky.

hopefully if we get enough people we can set up a couple groups to accommodate everyone.

I can usual play weekdays 1-4pm and some evenings + weekends, I believe I'm 6 hours behind so 1-4 is like 7-10 Uk.

How do you anticipate doing it? Only way I could figure would be hosting a private tourney - you'd have to just pick a time that you think we accomodate enough people and sign up with stars or ft. The other thing to consider is that the cheaper you make it, the easier it will be for folks to jump in. This shouldn't really be about the $, more about the chance to play with FTR members and learn from good players.
I currently have no roll on ft, but would play a low stakes game on stars if it fit my playing time.

i agree. making it low buy in is the best option, I'm good for stars or FT.

yes you would have to just set up a private game i believe you can contact Stars and they can set one up, but i might be mistaken. If anyone knows for sure how to set up private SnG's please let me know.

if we can get enough people to post whens good for them we can maybe set up a few at a couple different times, as long as we have enough interested.

i really think this could be benificial

We've done this a few times before, search for FTR SNG Experiment, I've also stickied linked to some of the HHs in the FAQ. From memory the last one we did was in 08. The reason I haven't done it since is that it's a MAJOR time sink to edit the hand histories (the last one took me a whole flight from Sydney to Hong Kong - 10 hrs). If somebody else is prepared to do the HH I'm more than happy to set it up as I can set up private tourneys at Stars.

To accommodate multiple timezones, the tourney was generally held at around 2pm US PT, 5pm US ET, 10pm GMT, 11pm CET and 6am Australia East Coast.

can't open any of the previous HH in sticky's???

couldn't everyone just post the link for their own HH's?
  8. #8
The idea is that you combine the HHs into one HH so you can see what everybody's hole cards and comments are.

Bugger, let me see if I can fix the links. Not sure what has gone wrong. If you could see one of the sample HHs you would get a really good idea as to how the thing worked.

i'm in for $6.50s on FT or stars, I am available at sorta odd hours though.

off-topic: does everyone agree the low stakes SNGs are a lot softer on Stars than FT?
Playing big pots at small stakes.

wow i can tell just from looking through those HH i have a lot to learn which makes me want to do this even more. so the only way to create the main HH is to take my HH and input everyone's whole cards? to bad it takes so long cause it would be nice to do this on a more regular basis in case some people can't make it. i don't mind giving it a whirl if we want to get one going i just might need a quick run through so i know for sure how to do it (would only be able to work on it an hour or two a day so might take a bit.). I'm usually free all sorts of weird hours too. usually 2pm - 1am mountain time excluding 4-5:30 so I'm pretty flexible.

taipan, was wondering if you thought to get everyone to sent you a trimmed hh, then lots of the sorting through would be fairly quick instead of reading through entire hh's for each person.
Took a quick peek, that's really neat to read it like that. Think I need to spend some time going through those.

Yes, unfortunately. One person (preferably someone who finished 1st or 2nd) needs to use their HH as the master, then everybody else's hole cards and comments need to be added to that master (ensuring that the hand numbers match up).

We racked our brains about this, but unfortunately I don't think it works because you need to match up the hand numbers of each hand to make sure that everybody's hole cards are correct.

I was just in a league that had organized a series of priv. SNGs on Pokerstars.
Not sure if it was solely the fault of the folks who set it up (or on Stars end of things).. but there were a few problems, main one was, because of Late reg. availablity, even when we restricted the games to 9plyrs., Stars would automatically start the tourneys off on 2 tables, short-handed for the first 10mins. of play. It sucked.
Also, blind structure was 15mins. (pretty sure this was the fault of the admin. who were setting up the games for the league).

I'd be interested in playing in this (on stars of Fulltilt) if someone can set it up.
Also Kijjo, if it was played on Fulltilt I could trade you the funds for it if you want.

Yes, I have had lots of debates with Stars on this point and they cannot change it (the late reg period/2 tables and the 15 minute blind levels). Also asked them whether they could do turbos and they can't do that either.

The solution is for everybody to sit out of the tourney until the late reg period is over, that way the first hand you play is on a full table with 5 mins left at the 10/20 blind level.
  15. #15
Very interesting idea. As long as it's going to be held on Stars, I'd love to play. Time of the day and buy-in won't matter.

What's wrong with 15min levels? The more hands, the more useful the HH is going to be.

Can the editing work be divided between several people?
  16. #16
Thx for the offer Poker Orifice, might have to do that if it's easier to get what we want from FT than Stars.
About the 15 mins blinds - depending no how many folks we got, that could really turn it into a long game. Just glancing through the private tourneys today, there are several with 10 mins blinds. Was it a long time ago or recently that you couldn't get them to budge on that? I think it's just that they have to have someone customize it and would rather be lazy. Maybe they only do that for recurring games (like if we set it up for once/week or something).
Also, are we going to have an only 9 player game? If it's more than that we're likely going to end up with uneven tables for a while anyways right? Sure it's not your standard game, but I'd like to play against as many of FTR's sng crew as I can!

i'm really up for any thing like kijjo, i don't mind playing 15 min blinds, and sitting out the first 10 mins. anyway it happens i think it would a good learning experience.

i don't mind taking on the first one (like i said might take a bit, i would do it an hour or two a day.) it would be nice having these on a semi regular basis so maybe we could rotate who does all the editing every time.

or maybe maybe dividing the editing work like fielmann said (a couple people each take 25 hands)

any thing i can do to help get this going just let me know.

haven't played stars for a bit, but the 6.50 Turbos on FT are super soft, i just moved up to the 11+1's but i still like to play some 6.50's because how bad they can be.

First step is to propose a time (in a separate thread) and keep a list of how many people are interested (like this - http://www.flopturnriver.com/pokerfo...ght=experiment). I'd do it myself but I'm real busy at work at the moment. Remember to maximise the participants, the best time is early afternoon US Pacific, late afternoon US East Coast, late evening UK/EU and early morning Australia East Coast. Probably better to propose it for the second week of April as there are all sorts of summer time changes going on next week.

The other thing we have done in the past is to pick like a standard $6.50 turbo game and all pile into it (requires some co-ordination by IM/phone though, and we did end up with one random who ended up winning the game! - http://www.flopturnriver.com/pokerfo...-a-143796.html)

hahahahaha thanks for reminding me how much I sucked. Despite utterly dominating towards the end, I ended up fumbling near the endzone.

I may be able to write something that speeds up getting the hand histories together. I've just had a quick go and come up with this. You'll need to make a copy of your hand history, called HH.txt and then run this script in the same directory. It will create a new file called HH_new.txt which will only contain the Game (hand) numbers and the hole cards. I should be able to get it to read in all the hand history files and combine them into one. I'll have a go at it when I get more time.

    Code:
    Loop, read, HH.txt, HH_new.txt
    {
       IfInString, A_LoopReadLine, Game
        {
         StringMid, A, A_LoopReadLine, 12, 17
         FileAppend, %A%`n
        }

       IfInString, A_LoopReadLine, Dealt
       FileAppend, %A_LoopReadLine%`n`n
    }

k i started a homegame group called FTRstudygroup, password is the same (might take a few days to show up as that name for now i think it showas up as #257128) once you see it signup when we get some people to sign up we can take a look at what times work best and set up some games.

  35. #35
I'm in too. Thanks for bumping the thread and setting up the game on Stars - the home game option really makes this much easier to co-ordinate.

Now the only thing that we need to do is figure out how to combine all the HHs without having to do it manually...bjsaust helped us do this last time so maybe he will oblige again. Or maybe Rage can help us as per the script above?

The script works fine, the character limit is the only bottleneck. I think it's limited at 25 000 characters, which means the tourney has to be posted in about a million posts. Can you get your character limit bumped up so you can post it in one or two posts?

Crikey, I forgot about that script. Yes, I have it written and it's ready to go. It takes everybody's hand history and everybody's comments, and combines them into one merged SnG.

I would have to post some instructions on the format the comments have to be in, etc., but it all seemed to work fine when I tested it.

The only problem, as Naka mentioned, is actaully posting the final output. My test final output (167 hands) is 192,000 characters long with all of the comments in, and the forum only allows 25,000 characters. I also recall there being some issue with the number of special characters ( etc.) being posted.

If a mod could post more than the set limits, there is no problem using my script, as I could forward them the final output.

Right, I just tried to post the output and I get this message:
The text that you have entered is too long (192811 characters). Please shorten it to 25000 characters long.

If I just try and post the first 10 hands, I get this message:
You have included 183 images in your message. You are limited to using 150 images so please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.

Images include use of smilies, the BB code [img] tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator.

Because everybody's hole cards are shown, the number of images is quite high. I can post 7 hands at a time, but this means splitting the SnG into 24 posts.

I've had so much fun in the past and taipan really deserved more praise for his hard work. Anyways, I'd be in if the timing was right and everyone got to play. If there's a set number of people then let someone else play because I'm not good enough, not a SNG player and I've been fortunate to play previously.

    We currently have:

    fulksy
    Nakamura
    RiverMonster
    taipan
    dneureiter
    Fielmann
    kmind (maybe)
    Rage (maybe)

That's 6-8 players already. I suggest you set the tournament up. Anyways, it's easier for people to say 'I'm in', when there's something to be in in.

I can transfer on Stars in exchange for monies FT. The amount doesn't matter if you want to shift a significant portion.

I can play most days between 10am and midnight (GMT), apart from Fridays and Saturdays from 7pm onwards, as I'm usually at the pub.

Fulksy, my script should work fine for 6-max, I just have to adjust a couple of things. It's only a 5 minute job though.

Cool, I'm talking about like 2 or 3 buyins for whatever stakes the sngs will be, (obv I'll win and then go on to be set for life from then on so won't need more buyins)

I'll pm you screen names if/when we set a date I can make

My suggestion from having organised a few of these in the past is to set a date and time that works best for as many people as possible and just run with it. Generally speaking, around 1pm US PT, 4pm US ET, 9pm UK, 10pm CET and 8am AEST is the time that works best for most people around the world.

I'd arrange this myself but I'm flat out busy at work and can't guarantee that I could even play myself!

How about 9pm (GMT) Sunday night then? Is that ok for most people? That time and day is fine for me.
