Soccer is slower and the field is larger. I'm not sure hockey has an analogy to set plays. I'm sure each player has practiced ad infinitum what they did in that play, but it was not executed to plan. Unless the play was: 1) Win face off 2)????? 3) Profit

A good buddy of mine played professionally in Europe and he said it was shocking how much of what they did was set plays. When he first joined the league the coach would given him shit if he broke away from the set play without any good reason to. In the lesser leagues we played in it was always like you described, practicing certain plays forever and waiting for a chance to apply them.

Not sure if the set plays is either a Euro thing or a pro thing.
