laptop advice? want to buy

I' m considering getting a laptop for general use, poker in bed, movie on the train, etc. etc.

I wouldn't do any heavy gaming on it i think, so probably would rather battery life over a discrete 3d card (which sucks battery as i understand it).

Anyway i look around and everything seems fucking expensive, was wondering if anyone could suggest a brand or model or any advice whatsoever? fwiw im in australia.

my advice would be to get something inexpensive and reliable. Laptops don't last all that long and combining that with the instant obsolescence of computers, there's just not much point in buying an excellent one.

This is sound advice that I practically live by when buying anything technological.

Sounds like an Asus or Samsung netbook will suit your purposes. Reconsider if you want to multi-table in any serious way.

No, they're great little machines - atom CPUs generally which is fine for your needs - but the screens are v.small. Usually 9" max I think.
The key positives are that they are robust, very portable, cover basic needs and are nice and cheap.

I can recommend pretty much anything by Asus/Acer/Samsung. Not sure about the rest.

oh thread got bumped. i decided recently ima go for a netbook, cheap and portable. small and underpowered ...but cheap and portable

I bought my gf a msi laptop a couple years ago for class. It was a pretty neat little computer with how portable it, and could still run multiple programs at the same time. Never played poker on it but I can see multitabling being a hassle.

Now I use a macbook and cant see myself going back to pc as far a laptop is concerned. Especially since pt is available for mac now (just not every feature). Netbooks not a bad option though for the price if youre not going to be multi tabling that much.

Yeah the eee's are great and were the first to market. Asus have pioneered a good deal that's been copied.

If you have a two year old, make sure he doesn't jump on it. The screen on mine is pretty fucked now but it's over 2 years old so heigh ho. Work have bought me a laptop recently anyway (obv brag).

macbooks are a bit of a pisser frankly, you're paying almost double the price for similar hardware and similar long-term reliability.. as long as you take care of a windows machine it has all the brags macbooks can bring

but maybe i'm just resentful as i'm gonna have to buy a macbook for my uni course and i don't want to shell out the price of a decent second hand car

You don't need a killer machine to play poker. Just make sure it's a 15.6"+ because even 4 tabling on a 14" screen can suck.

I have a Gigabyte T1028C with an Atom processor. No lag with 6 tables open, although I have heard 20-tabling is possible with HEM open.

I am going to test out 20-tabling with a remote connection to my desktop database as soon as I can download an installation file from HEM's website. Support, as usual, is really bad at providing support ...go figure. They are probably busy beautifying the GUI or buying a new piece of poker software.
