It is a common movie thing and it makes you look cool and bad-ass, but it is just not realistic to put someone like that in front, when they have to charge through a hail of arrows and rocks to even get to the opposition. You can put your generals and commanders in front to lead, not the guy who is there to become king.
Wrt your second paragraph, it's a very common motif in game of thrones to set things up where things are obv to the audience but not to the players. This is a type of irony that I forgot the name of.
Yes but that is not really what I mean here. It looked they were playing this off as being a surprise to the *audience*.
