My wife uses melatonin most nights and it works very well for her. I'm pretty sure it's safe to take every night without any side effects.
You can also try Benadryl occasionally, although I don't think you should be taking that every night. The active ingredient in Benadryl is the same ingredient they use in all the "PM" versions of pain relievers (Tylenol PM, Excedrin PM, etc.) to make you sleepy.
