Lemme check... pfft 1605, close but not close enough. I suck at English history. But yeah, fires and pretty explosions are way better than witch costumes.
As for ebola, I'm naturally suspicious of anything that the media tell us is awful. It's terrible in Africa because they don't have enough water for them to even wash their hands after having a shit. Plus they're all dumb and think witches are cursing them, or god is punishing them, so they're not best prepared for such an infection. But here in the UK where we have decent hospitals and plenty of water, it's not going to be anywhere near as much of a problem. That's if it even gets here. Although I wouldn't be all that surprised if a magical medicine emerges on the market that people start panic buying. Now would be a good time to get shares in such a medicine, right? I think I might be figuring out why it's top news in our media.
I've had friends from Europe over the years from school and being in Manhattan who have told me about Guy Fawkes Night. It always sounded pretty cool, especially compared to Halloween. As said, Halloween is definitely my most hated holiday of the year but I also do have some pretty horrible memories from early in life that took place around this time of year. At this point it's not really October that I hate...just Halloween.
As for your second paragraph: Of course any dialogue like that in 2014 is going to ruffle a few feathers but you're also of course accurate in your summary. It really is a mess in some parts of the world and due to fears of racism I think a lot of the educated western world is being shielded from the harsher realities of some of these environments in other parts of the globe.
