A record-breaking weekend of online poker tournaments is in the books.  Yesterday PokerStars took it upon itself to break the record for biggest online poker tournament with their $1 buy-in $300,000 guaranteed turbo event.  Nearly 150,000 players entered the event, easily smashing their own record of 65,000 players set this past July.  “Oskar69” was able to outlast the enormous field, taking down the title and a $50,000 first place check.  Also on the docket was the monthly $1,000,000 Turbo Takedown as well as all of the typical Sunday majors.

While PokerStars was thriving with over a quarter million players logged on, FullTilt’s servers were not quite up to the same task.  A freak server crash caused so many players to be booted off the site that FullTilt had no choice but to void their Sunday Majors and award prizes based on chip counts.

The Sunday Warm-Up got things going early. The Warm-Up has consistently been breaking the $900,000 prize pool mark for the past few months, making it easily the second biggest tournament every weekend.  A top-3o ranked professional on CardPlayer’s OPOY “JBlaze20” found his way to the final table.  He was soon joined by “.dmmarquez” and “NinjasTyle87” in a three way battle for the title.   The players asked for the tournament to be paused to look at chop numbers, but nothing was agreed upon.  After JBlaze20 was bounced in 3rd place, the final two players were more than happy to chop and secure six-figure paydays.  The $75,892.50 cash for JBlaze20 was the 2nd biggest of his solid career, just behind a win in the $1K Monday on FullTilt in October for $83,000.  He was easily the more experienced of the three, but as we have seen in the past, experience does not always pay off in big multi-table tournaments.  In the end NinjaTyle87 took down the $10,000 left on the table after the chop and nearly $130,000 for his victory.

This week’s Sunday Million took chip-chopping to a whole new level.  Most tournaments are chopped with two, or perhaps three players remaining. However, yesterday the final five players in Million decided to divvy up the prize pool, leaving only $30,000 left for the final survivor.  Benson “BBOY3110” Nikkerson took the biggest piece of the prize pool pie, receiving more than $210,000 in chip chop money.  The solid tournament professional took down his 10th five-figure plus score of his career, and easily the biggest.  This was the third time he had final tabled a Sunday Major, having taking 3rd and 7th in the Mulligan and Brawl on FullTilt earlier this year.

Below are the final-table stacks, bust-out hands, and chop-adjusted pay-outs:

Another tournament, and unfortunately, another chip-chop marred the heads-up battle of the Sunday $500k on PokerStars.  While neither player wanted to risk losing the heads-up battle, “Zackattak13” still wanted to be credited with the win and accompanying extra TLB Points. A bit of controversy arose when he asked his opponent to lose after the chop. The tournament ended just one hand after the chop, with “pleasepick” shipping in more than 80BBs PF with K3o and Zack making the easy call with A9s. This was Zack’s biggest score of his career, eclipsing a big 2nd place finish in the $109r for $66,796 in September.  Pleasepick is also no stranger to success on PokerStars, having finished 2nd in the Sunday Brawl in October for $100,866.

“DrunkPPlaya”, “Pipredream17”, and “nikov” all rounded out a solid Sunday500 final table.

The $215r saw a big boost in prize money, as the tournament surpassed the $200,000 prize pool mark for one of the few times this year.  The final table was full of big talent, including 3rd place finisher “Pot Odds 3” who took down the $1K Monday on FullTilt in March and has also final-tabled the Mulligan this year. Sorel “zangbezan24” Mizzi again found himself on our STR, finishing in 7th place here for $7,504. Mizzi now has more than $2,200,000 in cashes on PokerStars alone including two wins in the very same event as well as a $109,902 score back in May 2007.  “1$ickDisea$E” has also had major success on PokerStars, and this tournament took him over the $1,000,000 mark in career cashes. The $32,160 2nd place cash was the 2nd biggest of his career, just behind a $58,788 score back in February.  His heads-up opponent, “SexSeen”, won the Sunday500 in August for $90,097 and nearly won the Warm-Up in January, taking 3rd for over $52,000.

The Sunday Second Chance seemed to benefit the most from the Sunday promotions as the tournament crushed its $200,000 guarantee.  1,346 players joined the day’s final event, creating a rather large $269,200 prize pool. Former Warm-Up winner “plz be live” took down his second Sunday Major of 2009 by outlasting “TheMiltMan” for first place and $48,887. This was TheMiltMan’s biggest score of his career, and his 12th five-figure cash on PokerStars alone.  He has had plenty of success in the $109r, having won the tournament once and finishing runner-up three other times.  Danny “THE__D__RY” Ryan, a well respected tournament professional, made the final table but busted in 9th place. He has come close in Sunday Majors before, including a 2nd place finish in this very event in August for $39,150.

Because of the fact that FullTilt had to void their Sunday Majors we will not be bringing you any results.  Here is an auto-email players received after the server crash letting them know how their pay-outs were calculated:

We regret to inform you that tournament # 120324980 ($750,000 Guarantee) has been canceled.

Buy-in + Tournament Fee: $200.00 + $16.00
Remaining Prize Pool: $379400.00
Your Chip Count: 11940
Total Chips in Play: 12546000

When a tournament is canceled before it reaches the money, according to tournament rule 31.2 (http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/tourRules.php):
* All players still in the tournament at the time of the cancellation will
be refunded their tournament buy-in and tournament fee. Players will have
their buy-ins refunded in the tournament prize pool currency.
* In addition, the remaining prize pool will be divided and distributed
according to chip count – (Remaining Prize Pool)*(Your Chip Count)/(Total
Chips in Play) = Your Share of Remaining Prize Pool.
In your case, this means $379400.00*11940/12546000=$361.07.

Buy-in + Tournament Fee Refunded: $216.00
+ Your Share of Remaining Prize Pool: $361.07
Total Amount Credited to Your Account: $577.07

It is quite ironic that FullTilt had server problems yesterday yet PokerStars was able to manage a lot more players.  Hopefully FullTilt will have things under control next week for the first Sunday schedule of 2010.
