With online tournaments completely out of the shadow of the 2010 World Series of Poker this past weekend proved hopeful for the rest of the year. Last week saw a big boost in attendance and yesterday it became a trend as tournaments were up across the board.  With just the November Nine remaining in the 2010 WSOP and FTOPS and WCOOP events on the horizon expect to see even bigger tournaments, guarantees, and prize pools in the upcoming months.

One of the most fortuitous signs of a good day is the attendance in the Sunday Warm-Up. If the tournament exceeds 4,000 entrants you can expect pretty much every other tournament to hit their guarantees as well.  Yesterday was another example of just how important the Warm-Up is, giving players from across the pond a chance to play in a big-time event that doesn’t finish at 8AM their time. With over 4,200 players ponying up the $200+$15 buy-in fee the prize pool exceeded $850,000. The tournament has still failed to get all the way back to its pre-WSOP status which saw it surpass the $900,000 mark each and every week but it is up considerably over the past two weeks and shows no signs of slowing down.

A solid cash game professional, “Patonius2000”, made the final table of the Warm-Up yesterday before falling in 4th place for $48,195. The mid-to-high stakes cash game professional has been crushing Heads-Up games on PokerStars for some time now and has recently seen success in tournaments. This past May he nearly won a SCOOP major taking 2nd place in the $2k PLO for $58,200 and earlier this month finished 4th in the Sunday500 for $36,250. Joining him at the final table was Rodney “BigFlopper01” Burt and “budbrain” who decided to chop once play became heads-up. With only $10,000 left to play for there wasn’t much suspense but there was still plenty of money on the line as each player guaranteed themselves at least $110,000 in prize money. Burt, who has three top-4 finishes in the Sunday Million and $750k on FullTilt, sucked out big time to earn the extra $10,000. Budbrain was not as fortunate and once again came in second in a big event. The solid midstakes grinder was also the bridesmaid in the $109r earlier this year where he took home $30,705 for his runner-up finish.

The Sunday Million is back! With more than 8,300 entrants the Million once again cemented itself as the world’s largest weekly online tournament. A massive $1,663,800 prize pool left over $244,000 to the eventual winner “BarneyR2005” who took down and old but familiar face in “B Buddy”. B Buddy was one of the original high stakes cash game professionals to make a name for himself in the online world. Dating back many years ago he could be seen battling it out with the world’s best at $25/$50 on Stars against the likes of Jasson Strasser, Durrrr, and other well known professionals.  Unlike most other cash game professionals he has not taken to online tournaments too much in the past and his second place finish here was the first big score of his long career.  The same can be said for his heads-up foe. BarneyR2005 appears to be more of a low-stakes grinder taking a shot at a major event. The former winner of a $5r for $1,264, BarneyR2005 does not have many big cashes on his resume. That all changed yesterday as he took home one of the biggest prizes of the year, earning himself $244,749 for a hard days work. Below are the final table stacks, bust-out hands, and pay-outs:

The Sunday500 final table did not disappoint yesterday as some big names were on hand vying for the $90,000 first-place prize.  First to bust at the FT was Bruno “Bruno GT” Gonzalez Terra who is a highly-ranked tournament professional having won the $109r multiple times on Stars and earning more than a dozen $20,000+ scores through out his career. Quite possibly one of the best online tournament player in the world was on hand as well. James “ANDY McLEOD” Obst is no stranger to success on PokerStars and he added to his resume yesterday with a $20,639 score for his 6th place finish. The older of a SCOOP, WCOOP, and FTOPS title, Obst has a penchant for showing up big in large events.  He has also had some close calls in other majors including a 2nd in the Warm-Up, 4th in the Million, and 5th in the 2009 FTOPS Main Event for $127,211.

Busting one spot ahead of Obst was PokerStars very own Steve “stevejpa” Paul Ambrose who is a high-stakes tournament grinder but has not yet seen great results on Stars. With a few big cashes, including a 4th in the Warm-Up two years ago, Ambrose has yet to live up to his live tournament billing which saw him win the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure back in 2006 for $1,388,600.  Unfortunately the past few years have been a bit tougher for this PS pro but as most know with tournaments, your luck can change with the drop of a hat.  Heads-up play came down to “sfisch4” and “Kripp85” who decided not to chop and take their chances on a $25,000 difference between first and second. Both players have seen big time success on the online stage including the eventual winner SFisch4 who has 2 third-place finishes in major events. His biggest score came in FTOPS Event #12 earlier this year which saw him win $154,492 for coming in two spots shy of victor. His biggest “win” came last year in the $109r where he shipped over $80,000 for taking down the prestigious event.

While the $215 re-buy has certainly seen better days it is not doubt one of the toughest tournaments to win each and every Sunday. With a field full of high-stakes tournament and cash game professionals on hand you are going to need more than just luck to pull this one off.  James Obst once again was on hand, his presence resonating through out the final table before he busted in 7th place. What might feel like a solid Sunday for most was probably viewed as a bit of a disappointment for the formerly #1 ranked MTT professional. Obst was not alone as the final table included multiple million-dollar earners including eventual champion “blanconegro” who has come of so close many times in major events.  His three-way chop along with “SLOPPYKLOD” and “ramondemon77” earned him the biggest piece of the proverbial pie at $35,951. The other two players settled just around $27,000. Sixth place finisher David “sexseen” Sands is a top-25 ranked tournament professionals with numerous major victories to his name including an FTOPS win, the $750k, Sunday500, $1k Monday, Sunday Mulligan, $200k guaranteed on FullTilt, and $215r on Stars. With nearly 10 major victories Sands has to be considered one of the best online tournament grinders of all-time.

Finishing off the tournament scene at PokerStars yesterday was the appropriately-named Sunday Second Chance which gives tournament pros one last shot at glory.  With a few big names on hand it appeared as if the final table was shaping up for an epic battle; however, it was not to be as “squee451”, “The-Toilet 0”, and “gator93” all busted in the bottom half of the field. Squee451 is best known for a sick week in this years SCOOP which saw him win and finish runner-up in $3,150 and $2,100r events respectively over the span of four days. With more than $382,000 in earnings that week he proved to be one of the best high-stakes players around. In fact, he has basically come out of nowhere this year with huge scores including a win in the Sunday500 in April. Faraz “The-Toilet 0” might have an interesting name but it is not nearly as intriguing as his play. The high-stakes tournament professional is quite the aggressor at the table as he showed earlier this year on ESPN during the NAPT shoot-outs. The WPT Season VIII player of the year has had great success both online and live and is a force to be reckoned with no matter the line-up. Finally Frank “gator93” Hernandez made his weekly appearance on the STR with a 5th place finish earning him more than $16,000 early this morning.  While most might be thrilled with a $16k cash this scores comes off the heels of his runner-up finish in the Million last week which saw him earn $192,000.

While the three biggest names at the final table failed to produce a win another solid player was able to capture the Second Chance crown and more than $56,000. Michael “urmomislag” Lavin is a well known tournament grinder who has won both the $55 and $109 re-buy in the past as well as a huge $209,576 score for finishing 2nd in FTOPS Event #12 this past February. One final note, the final table bubble boy was PokerStars very own “nananoko” who is quite possibly the biggest online cash game winner in PokerStars history. The ultimate grinder, nanonoko has played millions upon millions of hands at $2/4 through $10/$20 amassing a huge amount of Frequent Player Points and a spot in their highest VIP section, Supernova Elite.

With PokerStars having such a strong day it was up to FullTilt to play catch-up as their events took a big hit last week with their “rush” tournaments. While PokerStars was welcoming back their player base from the WSOP FullTilt took it upon themselves to introduce rush poker to the high-stakes MTT crowd and unfortunately it was not well received. This week we were back to regular structures and the players responded, with a massive showing in the Sunday Brawl.  Out of the 2,585 players on hand nearly 30 were FullTilt sponsored professionals. Easily noted by the red font their name appears in the lobby, these “Red Pros” provide a slightly bigger bounty than just the $40 promised in the KO Event. A “I busted a FullTilt pro” t-shirt is also on the line which has made players go a little crazy at times, attempting to earn a piece of history during hands. Only two professionals, Andrew Feldman and Somyung Sim, were able to make the top-279 and earn money yesterday. Other notable names on hand included Ram Vaswani, Isaac “Menlo” Baron, former WSOP ME champion Carlos Mortensen, and former WSOP POY Allen Cunningham.

Alex “AWice” Wice was one of the better players at the Brawl’s Final Table yesterday evening.  The former Sunday Warm-Up winner busted in the middle of the pack, taking home $26,367 for his 5th-place finish. Timothy “highlandfox” Finne and Mike “Gags30” Gagliano found themselves heads-up and decided a chop was best.  The $90,144 winners share went to Finne who took home the second biggest score of his career, just behind a $94k cash for winning hte Sunday500 last year. The top-50 ranked Gagliano accepted a $82,5334 share for his runner-up finish which was the best score of this mid-stakes grinders career. With more than 30 five-figure scores on his resume Gagliano is the epitome of an MTT grinder but can now say he’s navigated his way through a large, high-stakes field.

The Sunday $750k was coming off an absolutely dreadful showing last week where the $640 $1,000,000 guaranteed “Rush Million” failed miserably.  Unfortunately things did not get much better this week as only 3,381 players entered the $200+$16 event forcing FullTilt to pay out nearly $75,000 of overlay in its biggest weekly event.  The FullTilt contingent was certainly not to blame yesterday as nearly 35 FullTilt pros were on hand vying for the $132,787 first place prize. With just four professionals making the money and none finding their way into the top-100 there was not much suspense for the rail entering the final table. Still, there were a few recognizable names on hand including “D1rtyR1v3r” who took home $94,051 for his “third-place” finish after a chip-chop.  While he may not have won the event he certainly earned the most as the two players above him settled for approximately $85,000 in cash.  D1rtyR1v3r is one of the more well-known online professionals and is nearing the $4,000,000 mark in career cashes between PokerStars and FullTilt.  David “gaucho2121” assumed the role of the victor yesterday but actually earned the least of the three involved in the chop. The former Cardrunners professional is a well-liked figure in the online poker world and his blog used to have quite the following.

The Sunday Mulligan has been the one stable tournament in FullTilt’s major line-up lately having routinely bested its guarantee even through the toughest of times. The latest starting event on the Sunday docket has been making a serious push for a boost in guarantee, as the $200,000 event has been surpassing the $250,000 mark with some regularity. The tournament should only get bigger and better in the near future with the added player base from FTOPS events coming along.  Yesterday two of the fifteen FullTilt sponsored professionals on hand cracked the top-100 and made the money. Andrew Feldman made the deepest run of the bunch eventually busting in 50th place after a long days work. Other familiar faces on hand included multiple WSOP bracelet winner Jeff MAdsen, Andrew “luckychewy” Lichtenberger, and TheWacoKidd.

Three strong players were in the top-5 at the Final Table yesterday including fifth-place finisher “jordankickz” who earned himself just over $16,000.  The former runner-up in both FTOPS Event #17 and the Sunday Brawl in 2009 has more than a dozen $20,000+ scores on his resume and a handful of $50,000+ cashes. Coming in 3rd place was “StuMan123” who has shipped the $200k on both UB and AP as well as the $109r on PokerStars. His biggest cash game in SCOOP Event #28 earlier this year where he earned more than $58,000 for his 3rd place finish in the $109 re-buy major.  Runner-up “mman_status” has seen plenty of success on a multitude of sites including PokerStars, Absolute Poker, and FullTilt. With wins in the $109r, $150k, $55r, $65k, and $40k to his name he has been there and done that when it comes to high-stakes MTTs. Still, all of his experience was not enough to take down the Mulligan as he fell just short to eventual champion “3dognight”.
