July is turning into a great month for online tournaments, with this past Sunday building on last week’s success.  Every tournament managed to reach their guarantee for another week, which is a great sign as FullTilt approaches yet another Online Poker Series (FTOPS XIII).

The Sunday Warm-Up kicked off a big Sunday with a huge $860,600 prize pool. The tournament has been killing its guarantee recently and this past Sunday proved it should not be slowing down any time soon. Aaron “aguskb” Gustavson was fortunate enough to find himself at one of the tournament’s weaker final table, and he took full advantage of the opportunity. Gustavson took down first place and over $135,000, by far and away the biggest score of his career. He had won a big tournament before, taking down one of the smaller $109r for nearly $17,000.

The Sunday Million is on a roll lately, and this past weekend was no exception. After being replaced as the biggest online tournament last weekend (due to the $500+$35 on FullTilt) the Million fought back with a vengeance, as over 8,300 players created a $1,688,400 prize pool. The final table was nearly over before it started, as a sudden wave of eliminations left only “skammes” and “Danneville” left to battle it out for the $245,422 first-place prize. The more experienced of the two, skammes, had nearly a 3:1 chiplead when heads-up play began but it soon evaporated leaving the two players nearly even in chips. At that time both decided to chop and leave $30,000 to play for, which was eventually won by Danneville, who before last night had little recorded success on PokerStars. Below are the final-table stacks, bust-out hands, and pay-outs:

There was a time earlier when the $500k on PokerStars was struggling.  The tournament had been barely reaching 900 entrants, forcing Stars to pay nearly $50,000 in overlay multiple times.  For some reason the tournament has seen a revival this July, including yesterday when nearly 1,100 players participated, creating a $546,000 prize pool. Some very good players made the final table including “gray31” who shipped the Nightly $100k on PokerStars for over $25,000 this January.  Another high-stakes player, “goleafsgo41”, made an early final table exit in 6th place.  The $21,000+ score was the 4th biggest of his career, well behind a near-victory in the Super Tuesday this past March where he earned $43,450.

Taking down the title was “floes”, who outlasted “Bob1Preston” for the win. This was Bob1Preston’s biggest registered score on PokerStars by far, eclipsing a $6,000 cash in 2007. The $92,820 first-place prize was floes’ biggest cash, and the 27th time he’s made more than $10,000 on PokerStars alone.

Just like the $500k, the $215r saw a slew of good players reach the final table. Making his second final table of the day was Skammes, who you’ll remember finished 2nd in the million for over $200,000. Unfortunately he busted in the middle of the pack here, finishing in 5th for a “measly” $11,210. Other big names included AmirSF, EndlessJ, VerySexual, and holdplz.  Besides those names heads-up play came down to a pair of experienced, well-known players, “All_in_at420” and “Dusnumbri”.  All_in_at420 has a bunch of huge scores to his name including a win in the Sunday $500, Second Chance, and $215r.  Overall he has more than $1,100,000 in scores on PokerStars alone.  His opponent, Dusunmbri, nearly shipped the Sunday Million last week, finishing in 5th place for over $64,000.  In the end, Dusunmbri was able to take down the title and nearly $39,000:

Rounding out a solid day of tournaments on PokerStars was $200k Second Chance, which once again obliterated its guarantee this week by $88,000.  This is one of the few tournaments on PokerStars that seems to never struggle, yet Stars took $50,000 off the guarantee during the WSOP and has yet to put it back. Hopefully PokerStars realizes its error and fixes the problem before entries begin to drop.

The Brawl continues to crush as this past week the prize pool swelled to over $500,000, which has to be a first for a weekend with out a promotion running.  For those unaware, the Sunday Brawl is a KO (Knock-Out) tournament which pays $40 to a player every time he/she eliminated another competitor.  Twenty-six FullTilt sponsored professionals played the event, including Allen Cunningham, David Pham, and Isaac “menlo” Baron.   Unfortunately none of the pros made a deep run. The best, Niklas Heinecker, finished in 161st place.

The $750k saw a nice boost from last week’s $1.5M $500+$35 event, which was part of FullTilt’s “FIVE” Promotion.  Over 4,400 players entered this week, creating an $880,200 prize pool, barely supplanting the Warm-Up on PokerStars as the weekend’s second biggest tournament.  A huge amount of FullTilt Red Pros played, 46 to be exact.  The big turn out failed to result in much success, as none of the professionals made it inside the top 200 finishers.  Players like Jeff Madsen, Lee Watkinson, and Eic Freohlich all played but failed to make the money.
