The Wall Street Journal Discusses “New Science” of Poker

In a recent article, the online edition of The Wall Street Journal gave a compact overview of the progress and current state of theory or “collective intelligence”, as the author calls it, in poker.

The article, by any means, is not a crash course on poker math or theory because the depth and details required for such an exercise are certainly beyond its intent. Rather, it examines how growth in poker popularity has, over the years, led to a corresponding increase in the strategy of the game. It touches on the critical concepts in the theory of poker, such as results vs. expectations, ranges and balancing, and equity in enough detail to at least spur the interest in a curious type new to the subject. It also mentions some of major contributors to the theory, like Sklansky and Phil Galfond, and does not overlook the role of computers in the development of the game. But the main merit of the article is, perhaps, the fact that poker here is treated as a mental exercise, on the pages of a prominent paper no less: every little bit that helps the glacial crawl of poker official acceptance is welcome .
