John Pappas Discusses PPA Plans at WSOP

John Pappas, the Executive Director of the Poker Player Alliance, a group that has been rigorously lobbying legislation at both the federal and states level, made a stop at the WSOP in Las Vegas last weekend to meet with attendees and discuss his various online gaming legalization efforts.

The PPA is 1.2 million member organization, whose goal is to legalize online poker in the United States. With the legal landscape in the country continuously changing, PPA has to adjust its lobbying tactics to get the most bang for its buck.

According to Pappas, the most effort is currently spent on legislative activities in individual states because this is where the momentum is. The immediate prospects of seeing a federal legislation are not very optimistic, in Pappa’s words, as “Congress has a lot of challenges, and having this issue rise to the top of things they tackle in the next 18 months is hard to believe”.

Therefore, the hope lies with the individual states. Pappas believes California and Pennsylvania could legalize online gaming by next year. “Once you get some of the bigger states”, he says, “that are not viewed as a traditional gaming state, then momentum can build”. As soon as the bigger states join, the interstate compacts to pull players and share resources and revenues will start forming.

VISA Now Accepted at Ultimate Poker

According to an e-mail sent to UP customers last week, VISA credit or debit card is now accepted for deposits at Ultimate Poker. Other options, available since the launch of the website are e-check, bank wire, check by mail, and direct payment at the cage at Station Casinos. Mastercard was added soon after launch.

One problem with VISA deposits could be that some deposits may be rejected by the issuing bank since VISA continues to use code 7995 for these types of transactions. This code is commonly rejected by the banks because of its relationship with online gambling before it was regulated.

Mastercard, on the other hand, has adopted a new banking code, specifically for “legal and regulated” online gaming.
