Happy New Years to all the Sunday Tournament Report readers. With 2009 being such a strong year for online tournaments, one can only hope 2010 will be able to match last year’s huge prize pools and big pay-outs. The first tournament weekend of the new year started with perhaps a bit of a hangover. While some tournaments were able to match (and even surpass) their recent number of entrants, a few others saw steep drop-offs in attendance.

The Warm-Up continues to be the second biggest weekly event in the online poker world. While other events have seen their ups and downs, the Warm-Up appears to know no bounds. Sunday’s earliest event crept closer to the $1,000,000 prize pool mark as over 4,800 players ponied up the $200+$15 entry fee. Heads-up play came down to Justin “looshle” Pechie and “Chris1804”. The players decided upon a chip-chop, guaranteeing each player over $120,000 and a chance for an additional $10,000. Pechie was the more experienced of the two, having had five $20,000+ scores to his name entering the final table. Chris1804 had not seen as much success on PokerStars, with only three scores in excess of $1,000 over the years. In the end the extra $10,000 went to Chris1084 as he won the Warm-Up and took home $132,862.17 in first place money.

The Sunday Million kicked off 2010 with a strong showing. Only 100 players shy of 9,000 total entrants, the Million prize pool grew to $1,780,000 by the time late registration ended. For once the railbirds were treated to a Sunday Million final table with out a chip chop as “uyra99” took a massive chip lead and never looked back. Trying to find information on the champion has proven difficult. It would appear this was his first four-figure score of his career! Runner-up “latouche83” took home more than $186,000, easily the biggest score of his career as well. Below you will find the final-table stacks, bust-out hands, and pay-outs:

This Sunday’s $500k Guaranteed had one of the better final tables in recent memory. There were plenty of well known professionals beginning with 9th place finisher “Skämmes” who has won millions online including a $179,353 score for finishing 2nd in the Million last July. Other big names making the final table were Owen “ocrowe” Crowe who took home $25,000, the 3rd biggest score of his career. Casey “bigdogpckt5s” Jarzabek once again found his way onto the STR finishing in 3rd place for $47,500. The top-25 ranked Jarzabek now has more than 20 $10,000+ scores to his name including a 3rd place finish in the brawl just a month ago.

Phillip “philbort” Gruissem, another highly ranked tournament professional, finished in 2nd place. Unfortunately for Gruissem this was another close call at the final table of a Sunday Major. Even though he has been unable to break through with a victory, he has still amassed quite the resume. Last September he nearly won the $750k on FullTilt, finishing in 2nd place for $82,604. He also finished 2nd in the Sunday Brawl a year ago, taking home $60,376 for his efforts there. Finally, he placed 5th in FullTilt’s $1,500,000 guaranteed last July for $68,786. Eventual champion “phounderAA” took down his biggest cash, surpassing a 5th place finish in the Warm-Up last September.

More big names were on hand for the $215 re-buy final table. 6th place finisher “RandALLin” has managed more than $10,000+ scores over his career including a $104,760 cash last April. Busting in 4th place was “hemipowerSWT”, who might be the most decorated re-buy tournament player in history. In one 72-hour span he was able to win the $109r on PokerStars three times! He has numerous other victories including a win in this very event a few years ago.

Connor “blanconegro” Drinan and well-known professional “bdybldngpkr” faced off for the title. Both players have had plenty of success on PokerStars alone. Drinan nearly won the Sunday Million in July, finishing in 4th place for $79,500. His opponent, bdybldngpkr, has won a few Sunday Majors on PokerStars including the Sunday500 last May and the Second Chance in 2008. Some watching might have hoped for an epic battle, both players were deep and quite killed. Unfortunately any excitement was quickly tempered as both players agreed to a chip chop, settling for more than $30,000 apiece.

The Second Chance took a slight step back in attendance this weekend, finishing under the $250,000 prize pool mark. No worries for PokerStars however, as the tournament still easily surpassed its $200,000 guarantee. A couple players without great results on PokerStars battled it out for over $44,000 in first place money. In the end a slowplay by “Rostrum” proved to be the right move, as his pocket Jacks were too much for cligityclank’s A3o, giving him a bigger full-house and the title.

FullTilt soared into the new year with a huge performance from their $400k Sunday Brawl. The earliest of the three majors attracted over 2,800 players, creating a massive $575,400 prize pool. The Brawl also saw a few famous faces playing including FulltTilt professionals Ram Vaswani, Lee Watkinson, and Cyndy Violette. The final table was highlighted by well-known professional Tim “Tmay420” West who is closing in on $3,000,000 in career cashes between FullTilt and PokerStars. West is also becoming a solid live player, having made numerous final tables on his way to over $800,000 in career cashes.

Unfortunately West busted in 5th place which opened up the final four players to decide upon a chip chop. Taking home the most money was “NudelTofu” whose $81,859 payday was the biggest of his short career.

The $750k also ended abruptly, as both “metfan4590” and “medijun” split the remaining $242,000 prize pool once heads-up play began. The $750k hosted plenty of FullTilt “red pros” including Mike “Timex” McDonald, Steve Zolotow, and David Chiu. Nearly 30 professionals played in the day’s biggest major, yet none were able to crack the top-100.

One of the more recognizable names in online poker found himself at the final table of the Sunday Mulligan. “The-Toiler 0” made it all the way down to heads-up play before falling to “iceontheriver”. The $33,573 cash is just one of nine $20,000+ scores on his resume. His win in the Second Chance on PokerStars in August and his runner-up finish here suggests he enjoys events with later starting times. FullTilt professional Jon Turner finished in 59th place, earning $518.32.
