Don’t have a lot of time this afternoon, but I thought I’d stop in to share my thoughts on the latest from the WSOP.
Outside of Men Nguyen’s win and the handful of first time bracelet winners, there have been very few big stories. There is, of course, the player who was banned for sweeping in a tablemate’s chips. And there’s also the news that players caught smoking marijuana in the Rio parking lot will receive a lifetime WSOP ban.
But other than those tidbits, the biggest piece of news revolves around a group of men sticking their noses where they don’t belong.
Several fellows (Shaun Deeb and David Sesso among them) suited up for the $1,000 Women’s Event, taking their seats with the ladies. Yes, you read that right. There are men playing at the no-dude tables. Now, supposedly this is being done for charity. But honestly, it’s rather surprising that the WSOP has allowed something like this. I understand the argument of a double standard here. Sure, if there was a guys-only tournament hosted, women would most likely be encouraged to play. That aside, I simply don’t see the need to butt in on anyone’s fun.
Anyway, that’s just my two cents. And that’s not the only controversial thing going on at the year’s biggest event.
Two of the game’s bigger names, Annie Duke and Tony G, have expressed unhappiness with the manner in which the WSOP is filling it’s final seat for the annual Tournament of Champions. This refers to their recent 9-handed sit and go, the winner of which will be entered into the TOC. It’s the makeup of the field, which includes actor Don Cheadle, which has raised some eyebrows throughout the poker community.
